Edward Hopkins Named New Chief Deputy of Harford County Sheriff's Office

Hopkins is a 'man of vision,' Harford County Sheriff L. Jesse Bane said.

Sheriff L. Jesse Bane announced that Director of Communications Edward Hopkins, a retired lieutenant, has been appointed to serve as chief deputy of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, effective July 1.

Hopkins will fill the position left by Col. Gregory Carlevaro, who is retiring July 1 after nearly 40 years of service, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

Bane described Hopkins as "a man of vision" in his announcement at the Harford County Council meeting Tuesday evening.

"[Hopkins] has a strong moral compass, a strong work ethic, and impeccable work credentials in the public safety arena," Bane said.

Some of Hopkins' qualifications:

A lifelong resident of Bel Air, Hopkins has dedicated his career to public service. For the last 40 years, he has been a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, where he is currently the chief. He's been a commissioner for the town of Bel Air since 2007.

Hopkins said that he was "both honored and privileged" to accept the new position as chief deputy.

"I have always been proud to be a member of the sheriff’s office and equally proud to call these men and women both my friends and colleagues," Hopkins said. "I am looking forward to working side by side with them and providing effective and efficient law enforcement, courts, and correctional services to Harford County residents."
