Abingdon House Fire Causes $60,000 in Damage, Fire Marshal Says

The fire was ruled accidental.

A house fire in Abingdon started Sunday morning after ashes were disposed of improperly, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.

The owner of the home in the 800 block of Long Bar Harbor Road discovered the blaze, which started in the sunporch, at approximately 2:38 a.m. on Sunday, according to the fire marshal's report.

Forty-five firefighters—from Abingdon, Joppa-Magnolia, Bel Air, Aberdeen and APG—responded and brought the blaze under control within 25 minutes, according to the report.

Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company said ashes from a wood stove caused the blaze, which extended partially from the sunporch into the house. Firefighters were at the scene for four hours, Joppa-Magnolia said.

The fire caused $50,000 in structural damage and $10,000 in damage to items inside the house, the fire said, and it was ruled accidental.
