Harford Commuters: Watch Out for Fog, Ice

Harford County public safety officials said drivers should slow down, be vigilant.

Particularly in northern Harford County, a combination of fog and icy roads led to a spike in crashes Wednesday morning, officials said.

More than 10 crashes were reported in a 45-minute span Wednesday morning, according to Robert Thomas, spokesman for Harford County's Department of Emergency Services.

The crashes began after 6:30 a.m. and have continued throughout the morning, Thomas said.

Most were reported in the northern part of the county, and some resulted in injuries, Thomas said.

At 6:10 a.m., the Aberdeen Police Department said that fog had visibilities down to zero and advised drivers to use "extreme caution." Minutes later, the police department advised that a truck and trailer went over an embankment at MD Route 715 and Hickory Drive.

A dense fog advisory was in effect until noon Wednesday for most of the state, including Harford, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service said drivers should use their headlights, slow down and leave space between vehicles.

Cecil County Public Schools announced it was opening two hours late due to the dense fog, and morning preschool and prekindergarten in Cecil were canceled Wednesday.
