Girl Impaled While Sledding Makes 'Full Recovery,' Fire Company Says

The 10-year-old girl who became impaled Monday while sledding in Jarrettsville is expected to make a full recovery, officials said Tuesday.

The child was taken to a pediatric trauma center Monday in serious condition after being struck in the back by a piece of rebar.

Her family contacted the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company on Tuesday, which relayed this message on its Facebook page:

"We were contacted by family of the subject involved in the sledding accident yesterday and was advised that they are home, walking and making a full recovery. Good job to Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company for working together during this unique incident and in adverse weather conditions."

When the sledding incident occurred—before 11:30 a.m. on Monday—Harford County was under a winter storm warning.

Despite snow, sleet and rain causing crashes and closures around the area, first responders arrived within minutes to help the child in Jarrettsville.

First responders used a reciprocating saw to cut the rebar from the child and it was out within half an hour of the time firefighters were dispatched to the incident, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS.
