Cedar Lane Hostage Situation Ends with Gunshots

Tactical teams and crisis negotiators were called to a dirt road off Cedar Lane.

A woman was reportedly taken to shock trauma with a gunshot wound after an overnight hostage situation in Bel Air that left one person dead.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office negotiated for hours with a man who took his wife hostage inside an SUV off Cedar Lane near Bel Air, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

Before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, when the man told his wife to call relatives and say goodbye, police moved tactical units toward the vehicle, according to WBAL.

Officials weren't sure who fired the shots, WBAL reported.

Police had been on the case since 8:25 p.m. on Monday, when a woman reported her 28-year-old daughter missing from the 700 block of Hickory Limb Circle in Bel Air, the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The woman said that her daughter had been running errands in Hunt Valley, and when she didn't hear from her as the day went on, she became concerned and found that her daughter didn't arrive at places she was supposed to be later in the day, the statement said.

Deputies learned the daughter and her husband had a history of domestic violence and had reason to believe the two may be together at the time of her disappearance, police said.

At 8:30 p.m., deputies tracked the woman's leased Chevy Traverse using the navigation system to a dirt road off Cedar Lane near Cedar Lane Regional Park, according to police.

"Responding deputies approached the car only to be warned off by the suspect," the statement from police said. "The woman yelled to police telling them her husband had a gun. Deputies retreated from the car and began negotiations with the suspect."

Tactical teams and crisis negotiators worked on the situation through Tuesday morning, the sheriff's office reported.

The man was 37 years old and has not yet been identified, The Aegis reported.
