Juvenile Charged in Box Hill Burglary

The teen was charged in a burglary on Sunday morning.

A 13-year-old was charged with burglary after police said he broke into an Abingdon home Sunday, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

At 8:55 a.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the 200 block of Laurentum Parkway in Abingdon for a reported burglary, the sheriff's office said.

A neighbor had called police after seeing a boy in a red-and-black plaid jacket enter the home through a back door, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.

In a canvass of the area, deputies found the juvenile "a short distance away" from the home, and after witnesses identified him as the suspect, he was charged with burglary, the statement said.

The boy was detained by the Department of Juvenile Services, the sheriff's office said.

Police said officials were investigating whether the suspect was connected to another burglary reported at 3 a.m. in the same community, in the 800 block of Tiffany Trail, in which the homeowners woke up to find someone in their bedroom.

In that burglary, an undisclosed amount of cash was taken, police said. In the Laurentum Parkway burglary, nothing was reported stolen, according to Eddie Hopkins, spokesman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

This was the second pair of burglaries in Box Hill this week. An 18-year-old was charged in connection with a pair of burglaries that were reported Thursday. Hopkins said the Thursday and Sunday burglaries were not connected.

Hopkins advised citizens to report "any and all suspicious activity" promptly to police. He said that working security systems and neighbor involvement helped police identify suspects in the Box Hill cases. In addition, he encouraged citizens to ensure they have adequate lighting around their homes and to be certain to lock the doors to their vehicles and residences.
