Accidental Shooting on Redfield Road Sends 1 to Shock Trauma: Harford Sheriff

The man was reportedly looking at his friend's gun.

An Aberdeen man was in critical condition Monday after he accidentally shot himself with a friend's weapon off Brierhill Drive, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 11:55 p.m. on Sunday, the 24-year-old was visiting friends in the 900 block of Redfield Road when he asked to see his friend's handgun, Eddie Hopkins of the sheriff's office said.

As the man, who lives in the 400 block of Pollack Drive in Aberdeen, was looking at the gun and handing it back to his friend, he fired and shot himself in the abdomen, Hopkins said.

The man's friends drove him to Upper Chesapeake, where he was stabilized and transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according to Hopkins, who said he was in critical condition.

Staff at Upper Chesapeake notified the sheriff's office, which is investigating the incident.

"Preliminarily, this appears to be accidental," Hopkins reported. He noted that the shooting is still under investigation.
