Harford Deputy-Involved Shooting: Machete-Wielding Man Charged, Officer Identified

The man who approached an officer with his machete-style knife Wednesday has been charged, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, which on Thursday identified the deputy who shot him.

Brian Matthew Ogle, 26, of the 500 block of Crownwood Court in Edgewood, was charged with attempted first and second-degree assault on a police officer, failure to obey a lawful order, second-degree assault, resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to injure, the sheriff's office reported.

Police said Ogle's girlfriend called 911 after he reportedly threw her down the stairs.

When she locked him out of their residence, Ogle broke into his vehicle to get a machete-style knife and was attempting to force his way into the house when officers arrived, according to the report from the sheriff's office.

Seeing police, Ogle ran toward the woods, the report stated.

"Deputies pursued him on foot to Route 24, where he then turned on the deputy, coming at him with the knife," the Harford County Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Deputy First-Class Bryan Walker, 34, a seven-year member of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, fired his weapon several times, according to the report, which stated Walker feared for his safety.

"Ogle was shot after he advanced on Walker, who repeatedly warned Ogle to put down a machete-style knife," police said.

Ogle was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was in stable condition Thursday, the sheriff's office reported.

Walker was placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, according to the report.
