Motorcyclist Accused of Fleeing, Biting State Trooper

The pursuit reached speeds of 100 mph, according to police.

Maryland State Police say a suspect on a motorcycle threw spikes on them during a high-speed pursuit before biting one trooper and trying to steal his gun.

The incident happened just after 1:30 a.m. July 20 and began on the U.S. Route 1 Bypass, just south of Maryland Route 924 in Bel Air. Troopers First Class Jon Sawa and James Davis said they spotted two men speeding northbound on the U.S. Route 1 Bypass on Harley Davidson motorcycles. As they approached the intersection of Maryland Route 543 in Bel Air, the officers said the two motorcyclists separated.

Davis apprehended the first suspect shortly after entering northbound Maryland Route 543. But the second rider allegedly continued speeding and driving erratically on northbound U.S. Route 1 Conowingo Road. Officers said the rider reached speeds up to 100 miles per hour and that he could be seen reaching into his saddle bag and throwing small metal studs on the roadway.

The pursuit continued across U.S. Route 1 onto the Conowingo Dam and into Cecil County, with Trooper Charles Smith joining Sawa in pursuit of the suspect. Police said the rider tried to evade capture by scraping against the dam’s concrete barrier as he drove.

Officers stopped the motorcycle at the intersection of Rowlandsville Road in Conowingo. Police said the suspect threw his motorcycle into one officer’s patrol vehicle before fleeing on foot.

Officers caught up with him, and a fight ensued. That’s when, police said, the suspect tried to take Sawa’s gun and bit him on the right bicep. The two officers eventually subdued the suspect before taking him into custody.

No charges have been filed and the incident remains under investigation.
