Girl Reportedly Injured While Rock Jumping at Kilgore Falls

Two Harford County fire companies responded to the waterfall, which has seen several injuries over the years.

Someone was taken to the hospital Friday after getting hurt while rock jumping at Kilgore Falls, according to a report from the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association.

At 3:34 p.m., the Norrisville and Whiteford volunteer fire companies were dispatched to Kilgore Falls for a report of a traumatic injury, the report said.

A girl had jumped from a rock and cut her leg on another rock, according to Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS spokeswoman Jennifer Chenworth Price.

The girl was taken to a local hospital, the report said.

In recent years, there have been "a couple of injuries ... mostly broken ankles, from swimmers jumping off Kilgore Falls," according to The Aegis.

A woman was hospitalized from a fall there in July 2012, Bel Air Patch reported. The Norrisville Volunteer Fire Company reported that it responded to a fall at the location in July 2013.

Kilgore Falls is the second steepest free-falling waterfall in Maryland, according to the Maryland Geological Survey. It is 17 feet high. The only steeper free-falling waterfall in Maryland is Muddy Creek Falls in western Garrett County, the survey says.

Price said there are "definite hazards" at the falls in Harford County because of limited visibility and variations in depth due to erosion.

To stay safe at Kilgore Falls, she said visitors should do the following:

  • Lead with your feet; never dive head-first into the water.
  • Keep away from the edge of the rocks if going into the water.
  • Know there may be rocks below, and it's a "swim at your own risk" area.
  • Abstain from alcohol.
  • Monitor children.
  • Use common sense.
