Around 11 a.m., a Maryland State Police trooper, based at the JFK Barrack, tried to stop a Tahoe, which had temporary North Carolina tags, around mile marker 77.5 on Interstate 95, police said. The driver got off on Exit 77A, turned on Maryland Route 924, and then jumped a curb and crashed into two vehicles on Woodsdale Road, according to a police spokesman at the JFK Barrack, who declined to give his name.

Two men stayed in the Tahoe after the crash and three others fled the scene on foot. One of the men who fled was found within 20 minutes, but the other two—including the driver—are still at large, police said.

State police from the JFK Barrack led the search, which was assisted by deputies and state police from the Bel Air Barrack.

Police surrounding I-95 between Maryland Route 7, Route 136, the Box Hill shopping center and Route 152 until about 3 p.m. when they scaled back the search. The men were described as black males, both wearing white shoes and jeans or dark pants. One of the men wore a red top with a black hood while the other man had a white hooded top.

The duty officer said police plan to file charges related to evading an officer, fleeing the scene of an accident and phone misuse after the suspects are taken into custody.

While the two men were being sought, one of them used a deactivated cell phone to call 911, claiming the pair had guns, police said.

“They threatened that they did [have guns] apparently but all the other occupants in the vehicle said they didn’t,” said the spokesman, a sergeant who declined to give his name. “They were just smoking or something like that.”

None of the three men who were detained are likely to face charges, the duty officer said.

“There’s not really much you can do with a passenger,” he said.

Based on interviews with the three men, police said they believe they know who the other two men are, even though they are likely out of the area.

“They probably caught a ride because they had a cell phone,” the duty officer said.

The Tahoe was towed from the scene and the other three men were released from police custody.
