Harford Sheriff: Deputy Shot Man with Big Knife in Edgewood

A man was injured overnight after he refused to drop a machete-type knife and was shot by a deputy, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said.

Police and paramedics were called to the 500 block of Crownwood Court at 11:56 p.m. Tuesday for a man who had reportedly overdosed, then assaulted his girlfriend, according to the sheriff's office.

Brian Matthew Ogle, 26, of the 500 block of Crownwood Court in Edgewood, reportedly had a fight with the woman and pushed her down the stairs; after she locked the door, he went to his vehicle and smashed a window to retrieve a large machete-type knife, police said.

Ogle was trying to kick in the door to the residence when deputies arrived, according to the report.

Seeing police, Ogle ran into the woods with the knife, and officers pursued him on foot, the report stated.

As Ogle and a deputy approached MD Route 24, Ogle turned toward the deputy and refused repeated orders to drop the knife, according to the sheriff's office.

"Fearing for his safety, the deputy then fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect several times," the Harford County Sheriff's Office said.

Ogle was treated at the scene by Joppa-Magnolia paramedics, then taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in stable condition, the sheriff's office said.

His girlfriend was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center with minor injuries, according to police.

The deputy has been placed on administrative leave during a routine departmental investigation after a police-involved shooting, the sheriff's office said.

Ogle has been charged with second-degree assault. The sheriff's office reported that other charges—failure to obey a lawful order, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and weapons violations—were pending.

Route 24 was closed between Hanson and Trimble roads for two hours as police investigated, and the area has since reopened, police said.
