Sex Abuse Trial of Former Bel Air High Employee To Start Monday

The trial of the Bel Air High School classroom helper charged with sex abuse of a minor is expected to begin Monday.

Anthony Leon Farris Jr., 24, of the 1000 block of Pirates Court in Edgewood, was indicted in March on charges of sex abuse of a minor and three counts of fourth-degree sex offense, according to online court records.

The charges stem from an alleged sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student, according to a release issued by the Bel Air Police Department. Farris allegedly used his office to engage in sexual activity with the girl, an abc2news.com story states.

Farris was employed as a classroom helper working with handicapped students at Bel Air High School, but was placed on administrative leave in January when allegations of sexual misconduct were first made against him, according to Teri Kranefeld, manager of communications with the school system.

He was let go after charges were filed, Kranefeld wrote in an email to Patch.

Farris also served as the head track coach and an assistant football coach at Joppatowne High School, according to Kranefeld.

Jury selection in his trial is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, online court records show.

Farris will be the second former Harford County classroom helper to face charges of sexual abuse in court this year.

Two weeks before Farris was charged, Amanda K. Miller, 35, of the 4500 block of Flintville Road in Whiteford was charged with sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy.

Miller pleaded guilty to third-degree sex offense in May. In exchange, the state dismissed two related charges, online court records show.

She is scheduled to appear for sentencing Sept. 16 in Harford County Circuit Court.
