Trooper Injured After High-Speed Pursuit, Crash

A high-speed pursuit and crash sent a state police trooper to Shock Trauma Friday morning.

A traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit and two crashes early Friday, landing one Maryland State Police trooper in Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Senior Trooper Jon Sawa was released from the hospital Friday morning having sustained minor cuts and bruises, according to police.

As a result of the chase and crashes, charges are pending against a Joppa man, John Jacob Nussle V, in connection with the traffic stop and pursuit that resulted in Sawa's injuries.

During the early morning hours, Sawa tried to stop a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt in the area of Maryland Route 152, or Mountain Road, and Stockton Road in the Joppa area, according to a news release from state police with the Bel Air Barrack.

The car pulled away and sped southbound on Route 152 and Sawa gave chase. At some point the Cobalt turned around to head northbound, according to the release.

The driver of the Cobalt, later identified as Nussle, allegedly rammed Sawa's vehicle at least once, police said. Sawa's pursuit ended in the area of Maryland Route 152 and Old Joppa Road when Sawa’s patrol vehicle hit a split rail wooden fence, according to the release.

A large part of the fence went through the driver's side of Sawa's windshield and police believe either the trooper's hand or the mounted radar unit prevented the wood from hitting him in the torso, according to the release.

Police are investigating the possibility that Nussle's vehicle pushed the patrol car off the road.

picked up the pursuit until the Cobalt crashed a short time later on Singer Road east of Winter's Run Road in Abingdon. The uninjured Nussle was taken into custody at the scene of the second crash, according to police.

Nussle, 22, has charges pending including driving under the influence of alcohol and first-degree assault.

Sawa is not the first in his family to be involved in an on-duty crash. Sawa's father, Essex native John Edward Sawa, was killed in the line of duty after his police cruiser was hit by a tractor trailer on I-95 near Havre de Grace in 1987, according to his online officer down memorial page.

The elder Sawa, age 40 at the time, had been a Maryland State Police trooper for five years, according to the memorial page.

I just meant it as a general statement. I have no reason to believe MAS isn't who they say they are. :)
John Dillinger February 08, 2012 at 03:49 PM
Lol, once again please your vast knowledge of cars overwhelms me... thats here nor there. A cop doing his job wouldn't have slid off the road and crashed threw a fence, this story has been told a different way every time I've seen it. Your telling me the kid was heading towards Atkinson road yet turns the pursuit around to "ram" the cop car... not buying it sorry. Trust me it makes me feel violent that someone would drive the same roads as me that drunk. You don't think having the entire sheriffs dept waiting at his house after getting the tag number wouldve been enough? What happens to this officer just proves my point about how big of a safety risk it is staying in a high speed pursuit.
Ashley February 08, 2012 at 03:58 PM
I doubt this kid would have slowed down even without the cop behind him, adrenaline going, alcohol in the system... I believe the cop made what he thought was the right call in that situation for the protection of the people and yet here are a lot of people blasting him for trying to do his job. You don't know how this guy was driving or the dangers he was putting on others with it, so how can you say that isn't the same call you would have made given the circumstances. If you try and run the police are going to chase you. I love how people are always wanting to blast everyone except the person who was actually in the wrong.

How old are you john? Lets take the whole car thing out of the equation for a moment. I will put this in kindergarden terms for you because i think you sound like your probably about 8 maybe going on 20. Who is more at fault? The cop or your friend the driver of the "faster" car?? Because to me, you know nothing about the story and further more you know nothing about cars. Have you thought about reading my post before you responded?? Again let me put it into kindergarden terms for you, THE KID COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION!!! COP OR NO COP!!!!
Greg Knapstein February 08, 2012 at 04:42 PM
oh and P.S. did you look at the kids previous record?? Did you happen to read the police report?? Did you happen to read the previous posts?? Get your facts straight before typing your stupidity. Wanna race for slips??? lol
Amanda February 08, 2012 at 07:05 PM
What truely leaves me speechless is the fact that still John you want to blame the officer! Firstly obviously you dont know anything about cars because most police cruisers are equipped now with a "Sprinter package" which in reality is a preformance enhancer. Secondly having police waiting at his house??? How ridiculous!!! How about we go sit and wait for this idiot to hit someone and then have to respond to the traffic fatality because 9 times out of 10 it is the innocent that is hurt or killed in drunk driving accidents! And the comment about the officer slidding off the road? Let me rear end your car and push it off the road and you let me know how that is slidding, You slide on ice or wet pavement!
Dillinger February 09, 2012 at 03:26 PM
Calling someone an idiot for having a more intelligent opinion and higher common knowledge is also laughable. Sure go ahead and call me what you want but having raced cars might not wanna threaten ramming me off the road because you might not have very good luck. I'm all about this kid needing a good ass kicking by the cops, and I would never drive drunk. No matter if he was chased or the facts are that as soon as tags were run, the entire police force along with the helicopter was in route to his house, and yes due to his previous record fleeing and DUI would have been enough to put the kid away and sure won't know how to drive by the time he's allowed to be on the road again... hence there would be No injured cop
Ashley February 09, 2012 at 04:06 PM
There may not have been an injured cop, but you can't guarantee that someone else wouldn't have been injured and/or killed.
SnakeSkin February 09, 2012 at 07:11 PM
again, wanna race for slips??? I will take the cop car. Just for the record, why did you change your name to dillinger, john?? One more thing, why did you even post on this article if all you wanted to do is prove that one car is faster then the other?? My "mini van" would smoke your 87 cavelier, oh wait thats right your 8 years old and in kindergarden so you wouldnt have a license yet!
SnakeSkin February 09, 2012 at 07:13 PM
......Hence there wouldn't be an injured cop....thats why your still in kindergarden, John. Correct Grammar please :)
SnakeSkin February 10, 2012 at 06:30 PM
No comments today john??

Yeah you are right about that. I am sick of my tax money being wasted on police and their mostly worthless agendas.
Anonymous February 19, 2012 at 12:17 PM
Everyone makes mistakes but all of these people have nothing better to do but to judge other peoples mistakes so they don't have to think about their own.
Anonymous February 19, 2012 at 12:20 PM
To Ashley and whoever else thinks that getting a Dui is not common, I know plenty of people to get dui's when they weren't drunk (you probably do too). And no I have never had one.
Anonymous February 19, 2012 at 12:23 PM
Greg and Ashley, you waste your time with assumptions.
SnakeSkin February 20, 2012 at 04:02 PM
What does gay rape sex have anything to do with this topic? FYI, as far as our friend Dillinger is concerned, very off base such as yourself.
SnakeSkin February 20, 2012 at 11:50 PM
Hence dkennylee your an idiot!!
SnakeSkin February 21, 2012 at 12:15 AM
Anonymous, how many posts do i have to find you on where your comments mean nothing to the article. Have some guts and reveal your female self because one of your teammates slipped. Contact your congressman/woman if you have a problem not every article on the bel air patch. Thank you!!!
SnakeSkin February 21, 2012 at 12:17 AM

SnakeSkin February 21, 2012 at 12:21 AM

@Anonymous I most certainly do not. I know two people who have gotten DUIs. One was my boyfriend, who was almost thrown in jail over the whole thing and definitely learned his lesson about it and the other person was a friends older sister... who ended up killing two people and paralyzing herself from the waist down. If you know that many people who get DUIs than you are hanging with the wrong crowd.

Sheeple March 31, 2012 at 05:05 PM
"get the tag number, and set up a road block" maybe they could have shot the tires out also- too much tv on your part that is not real world. "he made a mistake" sorry again but a mistake is adding the tip wrong when you go out to dinner. If this ass clown had injured or killed one of my family and the police only got his tag number I would be collecting a vary large payment from this state.
SnakeSkin April 01, 2012 at 12:31 AM
He's an idiot!!! Not a dirtbag!!! Does your cussin, I'm sure you meant cousin, know what is coming to him?? He's not a rapist or a murderer by any means! Believe me, he's an idiot who could have killed someone!!!
SnakeSkin April 01, 2012 at 12:33 AM
