VIDEO: Sheriff Calls Fallen Deputy 'Fearless Person'

Cpl. Charles B. Licato died following a car crash. His is the third line-of-duty death in the more than 230-year history of the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

He was fearless, low key in his down time and dedicated to his job.

That's how described a sheriff's deputy who died after a car crash while on duty Thursday morning.

Licato's is third line-of-duty death since the sheriff's office's inception in 1774.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Bane answered questions and gave insight into the 34-year-old Cecil County resident who had served the sheriff's office for 14 years.

Bane said a deputy was with Licato from the moment they arrived on scene and on to the medical examiner's office.

"We want Charlie to know that throughout this whole process we never left his side," Bane said.

Bane explained deputies also made sure to take care of Licato's dog in the wake of the accident.

"I have to say to his parents they're not supposed to bury their child, parents are not supposed to bury their children," Bane said.

He said members of the sheriff's office are mourning Licato's loss right along with his family.

"We have lost a member of our family and I'd like to say that Harford County has lost a very dedicated, devoted person who really asked for nothing more than the opportunity to work for the agency that he loved," Bane said.

Licato was driving a sheriff's office-owned, unmarked 2010 Chevy Impala northbound on U.S. Route 1 around 2 a.m. when the car crossed the center line, drove off the southbound side of the road, and hit a steel pole on the front driver's side then two large trees before coming to a stop, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

It remained unclear Thursday what caused the crash.
