Violations Temporarily Close Auto Repair Shop After Fire: Fire Marshal

The shop on Pulaski Highway had multiple code violations, the fire marshal said.

The investigation that resulted from a fire at Maryland Used Auto Parts in Joppa Monday afternoon resulted in temporary closure of the business, the Office of the State Fire Marshal reported.

"During the on-scene investigation, an inspection was conducted on the interior of the structure and multiple fire code violations were located, resulting in an inspection by the Harford County Office of Permits and Inspections," according to the fire marshal's report.

"The resulting inspection determined the business was operating without proper licensing," the fire marshal stated. "The business is temporarily closed until further notice."

Investigators were at the business, located at 1009 Pulaski Highway, as the result of a blaze the fire marshal said began during salvage operations of a vehicle.

As an employee was drilling a gasoline tank just after 2 p.m. Monday, a spark ignited fuel vapors that caused a flash fire, according to the report. The employee was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, the fire marshal said.

In addition to temporary closure of the business and hospitalization of the employee, the fire caused $10,000 in damage to the exterior of the business and three vehicles, the fire marshal reported.
