Whiteford Man Killed In Street Crash

The accident happened after midnight Friday.

A Whiteford man driving a truck crashed into a tree and was killed early Friday, according to Maryland State Police.

Investigators believe excessive speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the single vehicle crash, according to a release from Maryland State Police with the Bel Air Barrack.

Around 12:03 a.m. Friday, Charles Garland Jr., of Whiteford, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck on Maryland Route 440, or Dublin Road, in Street, according to the release.

Investigating troopers determined Garland entered a curve east of Wilson Road at high rate of speed, lost control and veered off the road into a tree, the release states.

Garland was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air where he was pronounced dead, police said. He was the only occupant of the pickup and no other injuries were reported.

Troopers believe alcohol was a contributing factor based on preliminary investigation, but the investigation is ongoing.
