Maryland House Announces Midnight Reopening

The public is invited to check out the new travel plaza on Interstate 95.

The new and improved Maryland House was set to open overnight, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The agency announced the reopening set for midnight Thursday.

Earlier in the week, officials gathered at the rest stop on Interstate 95 for a preview of the 42,000-square-foot facility, which has been rebuilt and modernized to include features like wireless internet and vendors like Phillips Seafood and Brookstone.

Dunkin' Donuts was set to open at midnight for the grand opening, and restrooms and the Sunoco gas station were available as well. All other food vendors were scheduled to open at 10 a.m. on Friday, the Maryland Transportation Authority said.

Amenities at Maryland House include the following:

  • Food from Wendy’s, Phillips Seafood, Dunkin’ Donuts, Jerry’s Subs & Pizza, Currito, Nathan’s Famous, Auntie Anne’s, Elevation Burger
  • Contemporary features such as free wi-fi, modern restroom facilities, LEED-certified building with natural lighting, indoor/outdoor seating
  • Shopping at Brookstone, Orange Optix, Bijoux Terner and Sunshine Market
  • Sunoco high-speed fueling station with 5,700-square-foot convenience store
  • Bus parking
  • Staffed Welcome Center
  • Kids Korner seating area
Since September 2012, the Maryland House has been closed for the $30 million reconstruction project. Private company Areas USA financed the endeavor with partner Sunoco. Through an agreement with the state, Areas USA will operate the Maryland House and the nearby Chesapeake House until 2047, while the Maryland Transportation Authority said it will retain ownership and oversight.

Starting at midnight on Jan. 17, the Chesapeake House will be closed for renovations, according to a statement from the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Areas USA will be renovating that facility, with plans to reopen by the fall.
