David Craig, a Shovel and a Dead Animal

The county executive's wife found an unpleasant surprise in the basement Thursday.

When David Craig uses a shovel these days, it’s usually at a . On Thursday, however, the Harford County executive used one to dispose of a surprise visitor in his basement.

When Craig returned from work two days ago to his home in Havre de Grace, his wife, Melinda, was distraught.

“My wife went down in the basement and stepped on a dead rabbit,” Craig said Friday. “She was not very happy about that.”

The county executive grabbed a shovel, scooped up the carcas and dumped it in his next-door neighbor's Dumpster (with his permission). He said he believes the floodwater brought the rabbit into the house.

Speaking from a campaign event Friday in Annapolis, Craig said from Tropical Storm Lee isn’t the worst he’s experienced.

“This wasn’t even close to [Hurricane] Agnes [in 1972],” he said, adding that Tropical Storm Isabel in 2003 was the he’s seen in Harford County.
