Officials Start Study For APG University Research Park

A collaborative educational and research facility could benefit Aberdeen Proving Ground and the surrounding community.

Officials from the Harford County business community and area universities were on hand last week to kick off a feasibility study for a potential university research park at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

A potential facility would bring doctorate-level educational research closer to Aberdeen Proving Ground.

A final report on the feasibility study is due back in August, following a draft report presentation in June.

"We need a lot of help between now and June," said Batelle Vice President & Managing Director Mitch Horowitz at a Jan. 11 presentation at Bulle Rock.

The project would take advantage of the growing industry on Aberdeen Proving Ground, as well as what is perceived to be a void in higher education in the surrounding community.

Horowitz said research indicated there were 42 four-year graduate programs located within 90 minutes of Aberdeen Proving Ground.

"I don't think any of those are closer than 30 minutes," he added.

Horowitz noted that those institutions conduct approximately $4.8 billion worth of research and development—representing roughly eight percent in the industry nationwide.

The study will indicate how to advance the project, including the structure, funding and potential locations.

What happened to the HEAT Center? When built it was touted as something spectacular. Sounds like more money spent on more duplication.
