Town Meeting Notebook: Red Flag Following in Brief Session
Tuesday's meeting lasted less than 20 minutes.
An identity theft protection vote was the focal point of Tuesday's short Bel Air town meeting. Commissioner Edward Hopkins was not present.

In the only legislative vote of the night, the Board of Commissioners approved an update to the town's identity theft protection program, as required by the Federal Trade Commission.

"The [regulations] require each creditor adopt an identity theft prevention program," Director of Finance Lisa Moody said. "I identified procedures for finance employees to prevent the establishment of false accounts. ... The staff recommends that the board adopt [the resolution]."
Town training for the prevention of identity theft will be conducted annually, Moody added. The town will not have to routinely report its training methods and prevention practices to the FTC, but audits will be performed much like the IRS does for tax purposes.

The approval of the resolution brings the town in compliance with the FTC's "Red Flag" rule.
He's Got that Appeal
The commissioners also approved the appointment of Brian Adolf to the Board of Appeals. He will complete the term of Matt Felton, who is no longer with the board.
"Brian is currently serving as an alternate on the board of appeals so he's the perfect person to step up and fill the vacancy," Chairman of the Board of Commissioners David Carey said.
Adolf's term will end Aug. 12, 2012.
A Word from the Board
During commissioner comments, Terence Hanley thanked Carey for not canceling the meeting, while Robert Preston showed appreciation for some town employees.
"I left the house early this morning and the roads were clear when I got up, so thank you to public works," Preston said.
The town meeting took place Tuesday due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day falling on Monday. The next meeting is Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Abagain Dempsey, a Bel Air High School student who was scheduled to sing the National Anthem at Tuesday's meeting but did not because of the , will now perform that night.
