7 Harford County High Schools Make Washington Post List

The 'Challenge Index' is based on how many students take Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests.

Seven of Harford County's 10 public high schools made The Washington Post's annual list of the nation's most challenging high schools, Harford County Public Schools officials announced Wednesday

The list, which included 123 Maryland schools in all and nearly 2,000 nationwide, was published Sunday on the Post website. The paper ranks the schools by what it calls the "Challenge Index," which takes the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education and divides it by the number of graduating seniors.

  • C. Milton Wright High School (ranked 63 in Maryland)
  • Aberdeen High School (82)
  • Bel Air High School (93)
  • Fallston High School (105)
  • Patterson Mill High School (107)
  • Edgewood High School (110)
  • North Harford High School (112) 

“We are extremely proud of our seven high schools for this recognition, and we are equally as proud of our staff for their dedication to the success of our students,” Superintendent Robert M. Tomback said in a press release. “We remain committed to ensuring our students are reaching their highest level of achievement and are prepared for college.”

The most challenging high school in the country, according to the index: American Indian Public Charter in Oakland, CA.
