HCC Profiles: SGA Secretary Obsessed with Grease, Foreigners

The newly-elected SGA, a group of students with diverse backgrounds and big hopes, takes over this summer.

SGA board for the 2011–2012 school year was elected April 27.

Priscilla Mint, Coordinator for College life and SGA advisor, wrote in an email, “I am excited to work with Matt, Scott, Denise, and Angelica. They seem like great people and I look forward to learning their individual strengths and how they can challenge each other to represent their peers and become stronger leaders.”

Matthew Manning enters this position with a strong background in leadership and politics. Not only is he a Political Science major, but he is also President of the Political Awareness Association (PAA) at HCC. The PAA has coordinated trips to the White House and the United Nations. Manning felt motivated to run for President because of a variety of policies which he felt hurt students, including increased library fines and an insufficient amount of time to drop classes or return books.

As president, Manning will control SGA funding, break ties in committee meetings, and meet with the President Galloday to discuss important matters.

“I would like to thank everyone who voted for me,” Manning stated. “I will do everything in my power to increase the influence of the SGA.”

Manning also plans to continue working hard to influence policy changes after he graduates. He would like to eventually work in a state or federal government position.

Fun Fact: Manning has had an internship with Congressman Frank Kratovil.

Vice President: Scott Sauers

Major: Music

It’s only Scott Sauers’ second semester at HCC, but he was quickly moved to make the college a better place.

“I sit in the Student Center a lot,” Sauers said. “I look at all the different people and I get a definite sense of community, but not school spirit. I think the SGA can play a key point in this.”

As Vice President, Sauers will make agendas for SGA meetings, act in place of the President, and relay information to administrators. In short, he will be what he calls a “mini president.”

“I appreciate all who voted for me and supported me during my campaign,” he said. “I hope to live up to my slogan: ‘You want the sweet life at HCC? Vote for Sauers for VP!’”

Sauers will continue to generate ideas and school spirit while at HCC, after which he is contemplating a career in either music or church ministry.

Fun Fact: Sauers was attacked by a headless turkey as a boy. (Perhaps this means he’ll be able to handle anything that flies at him.)

Vice President of Student Activities: Denise Hidan

General: Studies/Biology

“The VPSA has a lot of work to do,” Denise Hidan stated when asked why she thought no one else ran. “It can be intimidating.”

As VSPA, Hidan will need to help plan, volunteer and spend time at student activities. She will assist the president and vice president, and also make sure that they stay within budget to do everything they would like to do.

Hidan is no stranger to the SGA either. A couple years ago she ran for president. Coming back from a semester at UMBC, Hidan wanted to become more involved with student affairs. She already has plans to hold a night of swing dance. According to Hidan, HCC held such an event two years ago, with a live band and people to instruct students on basic dance steps.

“Hopefully we can make this year as great as, or even better, than the previous SGA,” Hidan said. “I hope to be able to fill Nick [Grieves'] shoes as the new VPSA.”

Fun Fact: Hidan fluent in English and Romanian.

Secretary: Angelica Willis

Major: Engineering

As an Engineering Major, Angelica Willis is fascinated by how things “come together.” This love seems to extend to campus politics as well. As secretary, Willis hopes to help others and just be “a part of the process."

Willis heard about the position while participating in the IDEAL Leadership program. Aside from the altruistic opportunities the position will afford, it is also something that looks great on a resume and lends excellent learning experiences.

“My responsibilities will be mostly administrative,” Willis stated. “I’ll be the backbone for the SGA. I will record minutes and handle suggestions.”

“My greatest desire,” she continued. “is to bring more activities on campus for students, and to ensure that all students are heard.”

Fun Fact: Willis is obsessed with three things: ice cream, Grease and foreigners.
