Patterson Mill Basketball Player Crosses 1,000 Point Mark

Senior Garrett Burkhead reached a landmark during Friday's game against Rising Sun.

boys baskeball game against Rising Sun Friday was more than just a win for one senior varsity player.

Garrett Burkhead, shooting guard for the Huskies, scored his 1,000th point in Patterson Mill's 62-27 win.

"For him to achieve this at a public school is a big deal,” , Burkhead's coach, said Tuesday. "It’s very out of the ordinary due to the fact that Maryland public schools play a minimum of 22 games a year and maximum of 28."

Burkhead is the first player to score 1,000 in Patterson Mill's short history.

Burkhead is and Friday was no exception. The Patterson Mill senior went into the game just seven points shy of the landmark and came out with 1,010 points after scoring 17 on Friday night. Patterson Mill's J.J. Butler contributed another 24 points to the win.

Clark said Burkhead is a prolific scorer who has finished with more than 30 points in a game on more than one occasion.

The shooting guard's virtues extend beyond his skill, Clark said, describing the young man as a team player and a hard worker.

"As an individual he’s a great leader, he’s been a four year starter," Clark said.

Clark said his teammates seemed more excited about the landmark than Burkhead himself was.

"I think he was more excited to be around them and achieve that goal with them and that says a lot about his character," Clark said.

Clark also said he is proud to have the young man represent the school and the team.

"I couldn’t be more excited for him, I think he’s put in a ton of hard work and I think it’s paid off," Clark said.
