Principal Demotions Not Affected by Thursday's Meeting

The Board of Education will hold a special session Thursday.

Harford County Board of Education President Mark Wolkow called a special board meeting for Thursday night to resolve a number of promotions and appointments that were tabled Monday.

Not affected by Thursday’s meeting will be the demotions and transfers of Aberdeen High School Principal Thomas Szerensits and Joppatowne High School Principal Macon Tucker, and nine other transfers.

Szerensits and Tucker will move to assistant principal positions at Bel Air and Patterson Mill high schools, respectively, effective July 1.

The transfers were "presented as information only," Tomback said at Monday's meeting. The board had no say in the decisions.

Manager of Communications Teri Kranefeld said Szerensits and Tucker’s transfers will not be affected by Thursday’s meeting.

“Technically, they have been put on hold by the superintendent until after this evening's meetings but tonight’s meeting will not affect them,” Kranefeld wrote in an email Thursday morning.

Nine other administrators in county schools—eight of them vice principals—will also be transferred.

On Monday, board members Leonard Wheeler and Robert Frisch objected to approving the promotions and appointments saying that they needed more time to review the moves. Frisch said the board received the information Friday via email. The board voted 4–3 to table the votes, despite Wolkow insisting the board was prepared to decide that night.

Wolkow called the special meeting Tuesday, Kranefeld said.

Among the transfers announced Monday by Tomback were:

Former C. Milton Wright Assistant Principal Robert Delava to Aberdeen High School. Former Patterson Mill Assistant Principal Joseph Collins and former Bel Air High School Assistant Principal Brad Spence to Edgewood High School. Former Patterson Mill Assistant Principal Lori Mitchell to C. Milton Wright High School. Tomback did not specify what jobs would be filled by those four.

In addition, former Havre de Grace High School Assistant Principal Mark Buzminsky will be transferred to the same position at Patterson Mill High School. Former Edgewood High School Assistant Principal Michael Quigg will be transferred to the same position at Joppatowne High School. Former Aberdeen High School Assistant Principal Carlton Ford will be transferred to the same position at . Former Harford Tech High School Assistant Principal Lari Dunlap, Sr. will be transferred to the same position at .

Former instructional facilitator at Patterson Mill and high schools, Marianne Chambers, will be transferred to the same position at Edgewood High School.

The board is scheduled to hold a 55–minute closed session Thursday before accepting public comment at 9:15 p.m. Following public comment, the only action item on the agenda is "Decision on Promotions and Appointments."
