State: Harford County Schools To Close June 11

The state superintendent approved Tuesday a waiver request from Harford County Public Schools to close three days early: on June 11 rather than June 14.

Summer vacation will start three days early for students attending Harford County Public Schools.

The school system announced Tuesday that State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery approved a three-day waiver request, enabling schools to close on June 11, rather than June 14, after a series of inclement weather closings during the 2012-2013 school year.

Harford County Public Schools closed for six days this school year—three of them for Hurricane Sandy and three more for inclement weather.

In response, the school system opted to remain open April 3—which was previously scheduled for spring break—as well as April 29 and 30—originally teacher professional development days.

According to a release from the school system, the waiver was granted due to the decision to remain open during those days.

Barring any future closures, the final day for students in kindergarten through 11th grade will be Tuesday, June 11. Teachers and 10-month staff will begin summer vacation at the end of the June 14 work day.
