Wolkow Says He will Not Return as Board President

Wolkow's position will be filled by a gubernatorial appointment.

Mark Wolkow's tenure as Board of Education president will end June 30, when his term is finished, he announced at Monday's board meeting.

"It is with mixed emotions that I announce this as I enjoyed tremendously the nine years I’ve spent on the board," he said during board member comments. "I have accepted the position of Director of Education Outreach with my employer, the National Security Agency."

Wolkow simultaneously serves as a division chief in finance for the Department of Defense. He has been the board president since 2002 and was reappointed in 2007.

"Due to the travel schedule [and my job], continuing on the board is not an option," he said.

Wolkow said he will be replaced by gubernatorial appointment, and that those interested in the position should call Patricia A. Foerster of the State Advisory Council on Early Childhood Education and Care at 410-974-2597. He said those who have specific questions about serving on the board can contact him directly.

The county Board of Education president receives a stipend of $300 per month.

"There have been countless moments of satisfaction both personally and on behalf of Harford County Public Schools," Wolkow added. "The opportunity to have a positive influence on our youth is, as they say, priceless."
