Football: Havre de Grace's Brooks says he is Finalist for Aberdeen, Harford Tech Vacancies

Havre de Grace lost the 1A state championship to Dunbar in December.

About three months after leading Havre de Grace to the state 1A title football game, head coach Johnny Brooks said he is a finalist for vacancies at Aberdeen and Harford Tech.

Brooks said he usually applies to nearby openings.

“I don’t want to turn down something different. We had good success at Havre de Grace, but you never know if there’s something out there,” he said. “I just like to interview and see the options. Not that you’re going anywhere, it’s just good to do the interview process.”

“We had a little lucky season … We just had some good kids,” Brooks said. “The staff is excellent to be honest with you. … Other than that, [we’re] not a whole lot different than anybody else.”

Brooks has not decided if he would take a position at Aberdeen or Harford Tech.

“That’s a difficult question to answer because it depends on if they have [teacher] openings in the school,” he said. “They won’t know that usually until the end of the school year. I’m not going to teach in Havre de Grace and coach at Aberdeen or Harford Tech. … That wouldn’t be fair to the kids and to myself.”

Brooks, a 46-year-old Aberdeen resident, teaches social studies at Havre de Grace. He said both schools have told him he is a finalist, but as of Thursday, he had not been interviewed. Aberdeen Athletic Director Tim Lindecamp said 32 candidates applied for the position and five have been selected for interviews. Harford Tech Athletic Director David Deutsch received 23 applications and was expected to begin interviews this week. Neither would confirm Brooks as a finalist.

“I’m just waiting to hear. … I’m a low-key guy. I didn’t even think it was newsworthy to be honest with you,” Brooks said. “[But] I’ve never left Havre de Grace, I’m still there.”
