Havre de Grace's Hutsell Among Maryland Open Leaders

Bel Air's Maryland Golf and Country Clubs is hosting the Maryland State Golf Association's most prestigious event.

Havre de Grace native David Hutsell took advantage of an early start Monday to stake his spot atop the leaderboard in the 90th Maryland Open at  in Bel Air.

The Elkridge Club professional teed off at 7:30 a.m.—the earliest grouping of the tournament—en route to a two-under par 70. He is tied for fourth, three shots behind professional John O'Leary of Pleasant Valley Golf Club, who shot 67.

Hutsell recently won the Club Professional National Championship in Hershey, which will give him entrance to multiple PGA Tour events.

Professional Jim Estes of Olney Golf Park is one shot off the lead after an opening 68. Sean Bosdosh, the 2010 Maryland Amateur champion, sits alone in third as the field's low amateur after a three-under 69.

Anthony "Serge" Hogg, playing out of Mountain Branch Golf Club in Joppa, is tied for 26th after posting a 74.

Defending champion and freshman-to-be at the University of Virginia Denny McCarthy shot a three-over 75 and sits in a tie for 38th.

Maryland Golf and Country Clubs head professional Michael Zeman posted a six-over 78 and is tied for 66th place. For a complete leaderboard, click here.

One hundred and twenty players teed off in Monday's opening round on the 6,938-yard private course. Normally a par 73, the Bel Air course's first hole has been converted from a par five to a par four.

After Tuesday's second round, the low 40 players and ties will advance to Wednesday's final round. One hundred and twenty-eight players were eligible for the annual tournament through exemptions and three qualifiers held across the state in May. Eight players withdrew before play began.

Players with Harford County connections have the following tee times scheduled Tuesday: Hogg, 7:52 a.m., No. 1; Zeman, 2:09 p.m., No. 1; Hutsell, 2:21 p.m., No. 10. For complete tee times, click here.
