Mustangs Baseball Coach, Blackburn, Stepping Down

One year after coaching baseball team to a historic season, head coach is stepping down.

The English teacher said he is transferring to , where he will not pursue a coaching position.

“They’ve got a [varsity] coach in place right there, they’ve got a good JV coach,” Blackburn said. “I thought it would be a good switch for me to have. It’s a time in my life where I can go ahead and do that.”

The 42-year-old Havre de Grace resident has 3-year-old twins with his wife, Kelly, who also teaches at C. Milton Wright. Blackburn said his family played a role in the decision, but it is not the primary reason.

“My wife has always been very supportive of me coaching,” he said.

A year after going 23–0 and winning the Maryland 3A state championship, the Mustangs finished 17–5. They won the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference championship against before losing the 3A North regional final to North Harford.

“There’s a lot of people that would’ve like to have won the conference,” Blackburn said. “I was very proud of what we did this year.”

Blackburn coached five of the last six seasons at C. Milton Wright, taking a break in 2008 when his children were born. Before joining the Mustangs, he coached for 12 years at Joppatowne High School—the first four as junior varsity head coach and the final eight as varsity head coach.

Blackburn is not completely quitting, though.

“As a matter of fact, I’m in the process of trying to round up as many 3-year-old boys as I can to launch my comeback in 2022,” he said with a laugh. “If you know any good 3-year-old left-handed pitchers…”
