Regionals Loom During 9-Hole Tuneups

A number of UCBAC teams were in action Tuesday on the eve of the regional golf tournament.

Golf teams across Harford and Cecil County competed in multiple nine hole matches across the region in advance of Wednesday's District tournament to take place at Ruggles Golf Course on Aberdeen Proving Grounds.

In a quad-match hosted by Rising Sun, North Harford's Ryan Triller shot 35 and led the Hawks to another victory. Their 208 bested second place Fallston by 12 with Rising Sun (226) and Harford Christian (240) following.

Jake Reeves led the third-best Tigers with a 39 and was the only other player under 40 besides Triller. Liz Silbernagel for Fallston and Travis Henderson for Harford Christian each shot 41 to lead their teams.

Triller, Sabernagel and Reeves are all expected to compete for the individual title at Ruggles.

The biggest team challenger to North Harford in the 3A/4A classification, and potentially the favorite, is expected to be C. Milton Wright.

The Mustangs (218) easily defeated Bel Air (243) and Elkton (266) in a tri-match at Maryland Golf and Country Club, CMW's home course. Randy Callahan, who is another individual favorite for Wednesday, shot 39 on one of the area's most difficult nine holes and was the only player to break 40.

Brian Wright's 43 led Elkton while Nick Loidice of Bel Air shot 44 to lead their respective teams. Shane Harper and Quentin Cummings also shot 43 to contribute to the Mustangs' victory.

The Bel Air Bobcats need an above average day to compete with 1A/2A favorite Patterson Mill and dark horse Harford Tech, who also squared off Tuesday.

The Huskies' 213 was the best of the three teams at Furnace Bay Golf Course. The Cobras (240) edged Perryville by two shots.

Zach Scheuerman's 38 for Patterson Mill led all competitors. Matt Sheridan of Harford Tech posted a 40 while Michelle Smith's 43 tied for third-best on the afternoon. Also shooting 43 was Perryville's Danny Geiger.

Despite posting a 46 that was second-worst of Patterson Mill's six players, Eric Langrehr is expected to compete for individual honors Wednesday. North East golfer Josh Yates is also an individual contender for Wednesday.

In Wednesday's 12:45 p.m. shotgun start at Ruggles, a team score of 340 is needed to advance to the state tournament, but only one team from each classification will move on provided they shoot 340 or less.

Five players will compete for each team with the top four scores counting, meaning an average of 85 is needed to meet the team requirement of 340.

To advance as an individual, though, as all players are eligible to do, the requirements are tougher for male competitors. A maximum score of 84 is allowed for male individuals to qualify, but there is a cap on the number of male players who will advance and it is determined after the team results are evaluated.

Female competitors, however, need only to shoot 95 with no limit on the number individual qualifiers.

The tournament was originally scheduled for Sept. 28, but was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
