Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda is the best high school in Maryland, according to U.S. News and World Report. (Patch File Photo)

Clearly indicates, that Anne Arundel High Schools need improvement and the School Board has to beRead More very astute in choosing the next Superintendent which is supposed to occur in May.
Steve O April 24, 2014 at 01:24 pm
Politics aside, something is screwy with this methodology. Churchill and Clarksburg don't even rankRead More despite numbers above most of the list some of which are laughably worse by comparison yet still received national rankings… Somehow I don't see a rush on folks moving from Potomac for what US News is naming as better schools down county. Unless I'm missing some byzantine aspect of the algorithm, by the list's own numbers those two schools should rank on the first page and I'd guess it's full of similar omissions and errors in areas I'm less familiar with…

Roger, if funding was an issue then the DC schools, Chicago Schools, and Detroit schools which haveRead More a higher per pupil funding then any of the schools listed on this report would be numbers one, two, and three.

Kolo - You are lucky to not have to work in the summer! Most teachers I know, myself included notRead More only have to work in the summer, but have an extra job during the school year because we are't paid enough to live...and I have a Masters degree!
Kolo Jezdec April 4, 2014 at 07:27 am
Ananke - I am very fortunate, I agree. We are a very frugal family. Many years ago my wife and IRead More bought a nice, but small and inexpensive home which we paid off in 15 years. We buy a new car every 7-8 years, paid for in cash. Our only indulgence is an annual Disney trip. Being off all summer when my children were young was truly a blessing, time that I would not exchange for anything. All things considered, a wonderful life...
Ananke April 6, 2014 at 10:25 am
I understand. My problem is that I am a single mother...so all five of us live on my salary. MyRead More children do work during the school year and in the summer, so that helps. I agree, that being off when the children are off is something that is precious!

I WAS BEAT DOWN BY 7 Black boys age 15 from 22 Breaking my femur bone and a lot of bones in my faceRead More . When asking them to stop you are killing me there reply was what the f@#k You think we are trying to do ? There were plenty of black people sitting on there steps and when my wife cried out they laughed and said we don't want to get involved. These kids were not provoked by me in anyway . When the police got there all they had to say was another Saturday night in Baltimore and that was that. They never even followed up with questions or even any kind of investigation to try and charge these kids who were by all means were perpetrators of a hate crime and there is no doubt in my mind that if I were a African American man there would have been a huge investigation and every Baltimore city news team would have covered it. We as White people have lost all rights and we are now the oppressed . I have always given respect to people no matter there race and this is the thanks that I have gotten. We need to stop asking what race you are on job applications and ask if you are a citizen instead . We have lost our rights and its just going to get worse until we as a race take it back . We need to do away with the KKK and the NAACP the United Negro college fund has to go . They even have a Black only dating site . Its not right for one group of people to have certain groups that they don't want another to have . I was out of work for 2 years because of the injuries and lived off my life savings and my parents also helped me a lot. There were no investigation what so ever and I believe the reason was because I am white if I was black it would have been a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the racists . I have Mixed grandchildren and love them with all my heart and I have never deprived anyone my friendship because of the color of there skin . I am not asking for anything but equality and this will never stop unless we get our head out of our ass and look
Pam Hamburg March 8, 2014 at 11:05 pm
Steven Spiegel, thank you for telling your story here. You didn't have to do that. Do you have anyRead More idea as to why they did that to you? Did you provoke them, even unknowingly? I doubt it, at least not enough to do that to you. It was more like the crap going on now...punch out a white person and run. It's hard not to hold resentments against a race in your situation. I sure would too.
Steven Spiegel March 9, 2014 at 10:48 am
Hello Pam Thanks for the statement . I don't hate Black people for the action of a few . I believeRead More until we take away Black TV/ The Naacp/ The United Negro college fund / Black only dating service or allow for a White tv or a United Caucasian college fund that there will never be equality in the United State's . If you want to be equal then for God sakes don't want more then the next race . And also why is it OK for a Black Person to hold up there fist and say Black Power but if a White person does it he is a Racist scumbag headed for hell ???? Its time for us to all grow up and be good to one another . And stop trying to be better than one another . I am a Bricklayer who works my tail off for my family when I hire from time to time I don't see race I look at how well the person works . When I be friend someone I don't worry about what there skin color is I worry about how well I am treated . Its time to put away the past and start looking for the future . Instead of breeding hate into our kids Breed Love and affection instead of fists let it be hand shakes and Hugs . If we do away with special groups for races or let us all have them without ridicule then we will all be considered equal . When we allow one we should allow all !!!! I would never judge all for a few peoples actions .
Future teachers worry whether they will be prepared based on their degrees.

Get out of education before it is too late! Teaching used to be an enjoyable and rewardingRead More profession, but not so for the past 5 or so years.
Ananke April 3, 2014 at 08:10 pm
Please, don't go into teaching. As a teacher, we aren't even properly trained for common core. WeRead More are demanding things from our students cognitively that they cannot do! Students are badly behaved and the parents are worse. Save your sanity, health and happiness and get into another field. I have at least a dozen teaching colleagues that are leaving the profession this year and at least twenty that left last year because of the enviornment. Teachers are the scapegoats of education. "Why is my child getting a "D"..because your child does nothing! Because you don't help your child or parent your child! Teachers are forced to be accountable for failing students..where are the parents/students responsibility in this...administratively...nowhere!!! Get out now!

patrick.j.luft March 3, 2014 at 01:20 pm
Just so you know the kids come from more than just 3 counties in Maryland they also come fromRead More Pennsylvania, and at least 9 other countries. And "homeschooling" does not develop the social skills to preform to your full potential in life.

The bigger question is why don't they plan for more snow days? Planning for 7 doesn't make muchRead More sense, plan for at least 2 school weeks (10 days) and if you don't need that many then you are safe. Also, not to offend teachers ( I know I will) but do they really need all these days off during the school year? They say staff development days, but with computers, and technology today there has to be a better way to have these days without having off from school. The joy's of having a powerful union that get's these schedules
James Knight February 26, 2014 at 10:46 am
First off I am not a teacher and you say powerful union I think the teacher union is the worst unionRead More I have ever seen, 1 raise in 6 years awesome union but that's for another conversation. But I do agree the should budget more time in for snow days like 10 or so. I also agree the staff development days are useless as well. But I also understand the importantance of the staff days I work for a company that does staff meetings all the time 2 a month. And these people teach our kids I would like them to be prepared and up to standard on what they are teaching. But this lack of planning ahead for the board of education is very poor. Their are teachers and parents the same that like to go away for the week.

It's about time Harford County got smart enough to see the quality of the staff they already had andRead More got over the fascination with "outside talent." There are reasons individuals move up the ranks and stay with an organization over a career. There are also reasons individuals change jobs every five years or so. HCPS's experiences with past superintendents must have taught them something.
Barbara Snyder February 25, 2014 at 12:20 pm
Seriously!?! The school system had to pay an outside agency to verify the decision they virtuallyRead More made years ago when Canavan was groomed for this position with her appointment as Middle School Supervisor. That middle school position was miraculously no longer needed once she was given her interim position. Obviously the BOE knew where she was headed. Why the game playing? Why the money wasting? Why the lousy teacher salaries?

The HCPSS BOE voted to take the RTTT cash and the pig in a poke which accompanied it. In partRead More because they always accept large amounts of money with complete disregard to the consequences of their actions and because they wanted a seat at the table. Only BOE member Dyer cautioned them to research and educate themselves on the issue. When They took the RTTT cash they were already 89% in line with common core. For the HCPSS it is mostly realignment so very little improvement. Beyond colleges have to accept their students without making them take remedial ed the quality of education remains about the same. The nightmare which ensued in the HCPSS was a combination of their ignorance, lack of almost any resources anywhere and the fact they are teach to the test experts not educators. Somehow and what Wilson was referring to is the HCPSS completely screwed up what they had most likely because they had no idea what they were doing. Not only was nothing above Algebra 2 untouched neither was Geometry. Parts of Algebra 2 which years ago were actually Algebra 1 were moved back but nothing was added to Algebra 2
Jack February 25, 2014 at 07:58 pm
I would say Baltimore and Anne Arundel as with the rest of Maryland will follow suit with hugeRead More expenditures and little change. Baltimore actually blindly bought new books. As you point out we do not have the money for the resources to implement this and it does not address the rest of our issues, if anything it cuts resources in other areas. Another issue is computer vision syndrome which has yet to be addressed. Most people with any sense recognize we are doing a poor job of educating our children which means we need to kick out every superintendent in the state and their entire school administration as well as elect new BOE's. As to teachers you are correct we need to retrain them but you must recognize decades of poor quality education has left us with very few good teachers. In the end and sooner than later we may very well see many poor quality teachers leave the system but this is needed as well.
Donna Sudbrook February 26, 2014 at 12:14 pm
What I would like to understand better is the role of the County Executive/County Council and theRead More Governor, State Legislature, and Maryland Dept of Ed's directions in all of these changes. While the County BOE and School System educators may have certain legal authorities, I am wondering how much political pressure they are under from the County and/or the State who together fund the school operating and capital budgets.
David Levine February 25, 2014 at 06:15 pm
All I know is that every time I ask my children what they learned, they claim they are prepping forRead More the testing. The schools are more worried about coaching the kids to do well on the tests than about critical thinking or giving them the tools to perform problem solving. Shut down the board of education and start over looking at Finland and Singapore as models.
Maryellen Brady February 26, 2014 at 02:35 am
Teaching to the test is a problem in the public school system. But, it is more an attempt toRead More evaluate teachers than to learn about the progress children are making in classrooms. There is a better way, to know how schools are performing and it is the accreditation process. Where schools are actually visited, classrooms monitored by independent observers and material reviewed.

Does North Harford require separate protocol for school closures and delays?
chefchic00 February 21, 2014 at 06:31 am
This is something that has gone on for years. I remember talk of this when I was in school. I thinkRead More it should have been done then.
Miguel Thecrazyhispanic Bobadilla February 21, 2014 at 11:07 am
The people that want this "North Harford zone" are parents that do not want to take careRead More of there children !!! They complain on school closures because they want the schools to watch there children. I read it every time there is a school closure, " why did they close" ????? These parents shouldn't have kids if they don't believe that safety should come first !!!!
tempest7211 February 21, 2014 at 03:27 pm
Of course there should be a separate zone. 4" in Abingdon and 10" in Jarrettsville duringRead More same snow event. No brainer. If you don't live in the Northern part of the county then you have no experience in it. Safety of children must come first. Period.
