Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.
The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. The following are recent arrests made by the Bel Air Police Department: Pylesville woman charged with violating probation Tammi Rebecca Neaves, 46, of the 400 block of Wheeler Road in Pylesville, was arrested May 14 on a bench warrant in a case in which she is charged with second-degree assault. Neaves was found guilty of second-degree assault in March and sentenced to probation, according to online court records. A warrant alleging she violated probation was issued for her arrest on May 8, according to online court records. A sergeant with the Harford County Sheriff's Office was taken to Shock Trauma last week after suffering from a medical emergency while on duty.
A Harford County sheriff's deputy is recovering this week after experiencing a medical emergency while on duty. The 38-year-old patrol sergeant, Noel Raufaste, was rushed to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore on May 10, according to Monica Worrell, public information officer for the sheriff's office. Worrell said she could not release the type of emergency, citing medical confidentiality laws. Raufaste was located by a second deputy in the area of Bynum Road and Cannery Road in the Bel Air/Forest Hill area, Worrell said. As of May 11, the 10-year sheriff's office veteran had been released from Shock Trauma, but remained at the University of Maryland Medical Center. A Bel Air man allegedly pulled the fire alarm at Regal Cinemas Bel Air Theater located at 409 Constant Friendship Boulevard in Abingdon.
(UPDATE 2:36 p.m. Wednesday)—A 34-year-old Bel Air man is was charged after he allegedly pulled the fire alarm at Regal Cinemas in Constant Friendship, fire marshals said. When the man, later identified as David Walters, learned that the showing of "Marvel's The Avengers" he paid to see was a "closed caption" showing, he expressed displeasure to management at Regal, according to deputy state fire marshals. Walters allegedly "became disruptive and argued with the theater manager," according to a release from the state fire marshal's office. Management offered Walters a refund or tickets for a future showing, but he refused and returned to his seat, according to fire officials. Jamar Jefferson, 28, of Edgewood, was charged on Wednesday with attempted second-degree murder and related charges, authorities said.
An Edgewood man was being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center Friday in connection with a Tuesday triple shooting that police say stemmed from an ongoing dispute. Jamar Jefferson, 28, of the 1700 block of Judy Way in Edgewood, was charged Wednesday with use of a firearm in a violent crime and three counts each of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police said. The charges stem from a violent incident in Edgewood on Tuesday. A third victim was identified Tuesday night.
(UPDATE 10:41 a.m. Wednesday)—Police identified a third victim following a shooting in Edgewood Tuesday night, and the crime is under investigation. Around 8:15 p.m. a shooting took place in the 1900 block of Edgewater Drive in Edgewood, according to Monica Worrell, public information officer with the Harford County Sheriff's Office. Harford County sheriff's deputies quickly identified two victims, a 43-year-old man and a 26-year-old man, according to a release from the sheriff's office. One victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen and the other sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.
