Harford Family House holds its annual home run derby fundraiser at Ripken Stadium.
Hitting a home run at Ripken Stadium can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Winning a car is even more uncommon. Participants in next month's Home Runs For The Homeless event will have a chance to do both. The event, which benefits the Harford Family House, will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 14. Teams of four will swing for the fences, and for targets around the field. Entry is $250 per player, or $1,000 for a team. A 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4x4—which is valued at $37,000—from Jones Junction will go to a participant who hits a specific target on the field. Whether they are 0-0 or 1-1, it doesn't matter. The Aberdeen IronBirds open the home portion of the 2012 schedule Wednesday evening at Ripken Stadium. Aberdeen won, 8-3, on Tuesday to improve to 1-1 after splitting a pair at the Hudson Valley Renegades. Eighth-round draft pick Torsten Boss belted a pair of homers to power Tuesday's win. The opener is set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Gates open at 6 p.m. Due West, a country music trio, will perform the National Anthem, and, during the seventh-inning, God Bless America. The Black River Entertainment artists will perform outside the ballpark gates leading up to first pitch. A team spokesman could not confirm the participant in the ceremonial first pitch. Stars from the Baltimore Ravens took to the field at Ripken Stadium Sunday afternoon, hoping to test the shortened fences during the Lardarius Webb Celebrity Softball game. The annual summer concert at Aberdeen Proving Ground is Aug. 11.
Aberdeen Proving Ground is still in Maryland, and there are plenty of New Jersey natives working inside the gates. But on Aug. 11, APG will belong to Boston and Kansas. The classic rock bands will headline the annual summer concert at Shine Field on Aberdeen Proving Ground. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased through the Aberdeen Proving Ground Morale, Welfare and Recreation office. See the YouTube clips with this post for songs from the bands. The official website for Kansas shows the date and location on the band's tour schedule.
