Wegmans is expected to gain a fellow anchor store in the Boulevard at Box Hill in Abingdon this week. JCPenney is slated to open Friday, Oct. 5, according to a story on ExploreHarford.com. A promotional website for the Abingdon location, however, states it is already open for business. Tom Fidler, senior vice president for MacKenzie retail, explained the business held a soft opening Sept. 29. After much anticipation, the leasing agency for Boulevard at Box Hill announced JC Penney will join Wegmans as the second anchor to the developing Abingdon shopping center. MacKenzie Retail LLC, the leasing agent, announced the newcomer to Boulevard at Box Hill on Thursday. The 85,775-square-foot location is expected open this fall, according to a press release from MacKenzie Retail. “We look forward to welcoming JC Penney to our growing community. More than 150 people lined up outside Joe's Crab Shack in Abingdon Monday to be among the first to taste the restaurant's cuisine.
More than 150 people were standing in the chilly January air Monday awaiting their first taste of Joe's Crab Shack. The restaurant, located in the Boulevard at Box Hill Shopping Center in Abingdon, officially opened its doors Monday with a ribbon-cutting and a waiting crowd. About 150 people were standing in line outside the restaurant shortly after the 11 a.m. ribbon cutting. "Some people were here as early as 12 p.m. yesterday," Brian Saunders said. Saunders was taking song requests and performing for those in line, along with Kevin Kelton, Bruce Mulford and "Skull." The staff at Joe's Crab Shack in the Boulevard at Box Hill are conducting mock service days for friends and family leading up to Monday's grand opening.
Joe's Crab Shack will officially open its doors Monday, but from Thursday through Saturday, the restaurant staff will get the swing of things by serving family and friends by invitation only. The days before opening, known as "mock service" days, give employees a dry run to practice for grand opening. "Everybody's excited when a new restaurant opens," general manager Craig Hawkins of Federal Hill said. Hawkins, who has been with the company for eight months, raved about one of Joe's Crab Shack's most popular dishes Thursday. "We're known for our steam pots," Hawkins said. No decision has been made on what will join Wegmans as the second anchor store in the Boulevard at Box Hill shopping center.
For now, Wegmans stands as the lone anchor in the Boulevard at Box Hill, but a new name may be announced within the next month. “We have not selected the second anchor for the Boulevard," Tom Fidler, senior vice president and principal of MacKenzie Commerical Real Estate Services, the Boulevard's consulting and leasing agent, said Friday. Fiddler said MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate is in discussion with several national retailers, and the company is working to decide what phase three of the project will look like. Fiddler could not disclose which retailers were among the options. “We're still in the deliberation,” said Fiddler, adding that a decision could be made on the anchor store within the next month.

Joe's Crab Shack, the first restaurant slated for the Boulevard at Box Hill, is set to open by December, according to The Baltimore Sun. Originally projected to open Oct. 1, the business will join Wegmans, which opened Sept. 18. PNC Bank and Panera Bread are also set to open on the Boulevard, as first reported by Patch. The menu for Joe’s includes shrimp, mussels, oysters, and of course, crabs. The restaurant also serves burgers, desserts and alcoholic beverages. Joe’s opened its first location in Texas in 1991 and now has 114 eateries nationwide, including in Greenbelt, Gaithersburg, Wilmington and Washington, DC. The Gourmet Dining corporation owns the restaurant. Encore Construction won the bid to build the business.
