National Police Week 2013: 'We Ride for Those Who Died'

Some 1,700 people -- family, friends, policemen and policewomen -- arrive at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial by bike to join thousands of others honoring fallen officers in Washington, D.C.

Led by a caravan of motorcycle cops, an estimated 1,700 people arrived at the national police memorial on their bikes Sunday, part of a week-long series of events to honor more than 19,000 officers lost in the line of duty. The motorcyclists and bicyclists rode beside each other and behind each other, into the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and between two 304-foot marble walls etched with the names of officers lost. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers and their families will converge on Washington this week for National Police Week 2013, May 12 through May 18. Among the events will be the Annual Candlelight Vigil, now in its 25th year, on Monday, May 13. National Police Week 2013 full schedule of events. One retired Harford County sheriff's deputy expressed disappointment in the response some people had to the recent deaths of Harford County law enforcement officers. September has been a deadly month for members of Harford County law enforcement. Three Harford County sheriff's deputies and one Aberdeen Police officer died in incidents both on- and off-duty within an 8-day period between Sept. 6 and Sept. 13. Traffic Delays Expected For Deputy Funeral Wednesday

Sgt. Ian Loughran will be laid to rest Sept. 19.

The second Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy to die suddenly within a one-week period will be laid to rest Wednesday, and the funeral procession is expected to cause traffic delays. Sgt. Ian Loughran, 43, unknowingly suffered heart attack symptoms during services for Cpl. Charles Licato Sept. 12 and died early the next morning at his home, the sheriff's office said in a news release Thursday afternoon. The 16-year sheriff's office veteran is survived by a wife and child, police say. Viewings are set to take place Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at McComas Funeral Home, located at 1317 Cokesbury Road in Abingdon. There will always be those who are willfully or just unfortunately ignorant of what being a police officer truly entails. Sgt. Loughran had the heart attack while on the job. He did not pass away until later, but it was still the cause of his passing. Cpl. Harford County Sheriff's Office Identifies Fallen Deputy

The Harford County Sheriff's Office has lost two deputies in the past week.

UPDATED (3:39 p.m.)—The Harford County Sheriff's Office has identified the second deputy to have died in the past week. Sgt. Ian Loughran, 43, unknowingly suffered heart attack symptoms during services for Cpl. Charles Licato Wednesday and died early Thursday morning at his home, the sheriff's office said in a news release Thursday afternoon. Patch first reported the death of a second deputy Thursday morning. In the news release, Harford County Sheriff Jesse Bane said: "Yesterday I spoke of a new star in the heavens when speaking of Charles Licato, today it seems a second star now joins him." Harford County Sheriff's Office Confirms Second Deputy Death In A Week

The deputy's death is the second in a week for the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

A Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy has died, a department spokesperson confirmed to Patch. Spokeswoman Monica Worrell said a deputy died, but could not confirm details. The deputy's name has not been released. It's the third law enforcement death in a week in Harford County. Harford County Sheriff's Office Cpl. Charles Licato died in an accident while at the end of his shift early in the morning on Sept. 6.  Aberdeen police OFC Charles Armetta died in an off-duty accident in Baltimore early on Sept. 8. Harford Lays Cpl. Charles Licato To Rest

More than 800 uniformed law enforcement and hundreds more community members paid tribute the Harford County sheriff's deputy Sept. 12.

Friends, family and colleagues bid a somber, and at times tearful, goodbye to Cpl. Charles Licato Wednesday. The 14-year Harford County Sheriff's Office veteran died in a single-car crash on U.S. Route 1 in Darlington early Thursday morning as he was heading home from a shift. Licato's marks the third line of duty death in the sheriff's office's 238-year history. More than 200 sheriff's deputies and 600 members of neighboring police forces attended the funeral at Mountain Christian Church in Joppa on Wednesday. Harford County Sheriff L. Harford Deputy's Funeral Expected to Disrupt Traffic

The Harford County Sheriff's Office sent out an alert message warning travelers of possible delays.

The Harford County sheriff's deputy, who died while on duty last week, will be laid to rest Wednesday and the sheriff's office warns the funeral services and procession may cause traffic delays. Cpl. Charles Licato died after an early morning car crash in Darlington on Sept. 6 while he was on duty. His is the third death in the line-of-duty  since the sheriff's office's inception in 1774. Funeral Services Set For Cpl. Charles Licato

The Harford County Sheriff's Officer died in the line of duty early Thursday morning.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office announced Friday that funeral arrangments have been set for Cpl. Charles B. Licato. The veteran officer died in a single-car crash on U.S. Route 1 in Darlington early Thursday morning as he was heading home from a shift. A viewing will be held from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday at McComas Funeral Home in Abingdon. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at Mountain Christian Church on Mountain Road in Joppa. The burial service will take place following the funeral at Bel Air Memorial Gardens at 809 Rock Spring Road in Bel Air. See more:

Cpl. Charles B. Licato died following a car crash. His is the third line-of-duty death in the more than 230-year history of the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

He was fearless, low key in his down time and dedicated to his job. That's how Harford County Sheriff L. Jesse Bane described Cpl. Charles Licato, a sheriff's deputy who died after a car crash while on duty Thursday morning. Licato's is third line-of-duty death since the sheriff's office's inception in 1774. At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Bane answered questions and gave insight into the 34-year-old Cecil County resident who had served the sheriff's office for 14 years.
