What would you like to see in this commercial vacancy on the border of Bel Air and Forest Hill?
After serving the community for 32 years, Manny's Restaurant now sits vacant. The restaurant's closing caught a number of local customers by surprise. The business, which was family-owned since 1980, has been closed since October 2012. Now, the windows of 1433 Rock Spring Road are covered in brown paper and a hand-written sign thanks customers for their support over the years. What business do you think would be a good fit for this commercial property? Tell us in the comments.

The fire caused about $50,000 damage to a portable classroom.
Fire spread through a Forest Lakes Elementary School classroom in the early hours of Thursday morning and officials believe a malfunctioning heating unit is to blame. Around 1:20 a.m. Thursday, a Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy on patrol noticed a fire inside the school, located at 100 block of Osborne Parkway in Forest Hill, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Fire crews from Bel Air and Jarrettsville volunteer fire companies were called scene and quickly containted the blaze to the front area of a portable classroom and an outside heating unit where investigators believe the fire began, the release states. While the portable classroom did have a fire alarm and sprinkler system, they did not …

Harford County official, Maryland's governor say sequestration would take a toll on defense and morale.
Governor Martin O’Malley said Wednesday that Congress’s inability to compromise on budget cuts has led to a situation where across-the-board cuts could slow Maryland’s economic growth. O’Malley said in a press conference that 12,000 jobs could be lost statewide due to sequestration. Without action from Congress, the sequester would go into effect automatically on March 1, reducing spending in education, the environment, health, military and law enforcement. Harford County—where the U.S. Department of Labor reports that 18,423 residents are employed by the federal government—stands to take a hit if Congress does not reach a compromise. Specifically, base operation funding in Maryland would be cut by approximately $95 million, the White …
The charges stem from a 2011 crash that claimed the life of Joshua John Hanna of Street.
The trial of a Churchville man charged with crashing his car while under the influence, killing another man, was postponed Tuesday. Jordan Craig Stewart, 27, of the 500 block of Bryarly Court in Churchville, was indicted in October 2012 on charges of negligent manslaughter by vehicle, negligent homicide by auto while using drugs and six related charges. His trial was set to begin Tuesday, but instead was pushed back to June 10. The charges stem from a crash that killed a 21-year-old man from Street. On Nov. 5, 2011, Joshua John Hanna, 21, was driving a 2008 Hyundai Elantra eastbound on Maryland Route 22. At the same time, Stewart was driving a 1994 Dodge Ram pickup in the opposite direction. Just before 4 p.m., the pickup crossed the …
The victims were Navy divers, said Aberdeen Proving Ground officials.
Police said the man was identified as Scott Hammer, founder of Bel Air's CODA Records, by his driver's license and clothing.
Nearly two months after Scott Hammer's wife reported him missing and a vehicle registered to them was abandoned near the Conowingo Dam, police said his body was found in the Susquehanna River. Hammer, 57, lived on the 300 block of Bourbon Street in Havre de Grace and owned a business on Main Street in Bel Air. Maryland State Police said that just before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, workers at the Conowingo Dam reported seeing a body on a rock when the water level subsided. Since the area was not accessible by foot or by boat, a Maryland State Police helicopter flew in and lowered two flight paramedics with a rescue basket down to the body, according to police. The body was placed in the rescue basket and hoisted from the river, state police said. It…

Around 6:15 p.m. several people contacted Maryland State Police with the Bel Air Barrack to report a shooting outside Burger King, located at 2110 Emmorton Road, according to a release from state police. Troopers and deputies with the Harford County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene a short time later and canvassed the area. Something original needs to go here. I mean really ...another Panera, Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?! Doesn't Harford county have enough of those already? How about a REAL NY style deli or a non chain bakery. Or a real taqueria? A convenient local Farm store with all locally made/grown products? Harford county needs some imagination. Seriously.   more ›
