More than two dozen firefighters trudged a mile into Joppa woods last week to combat a fire. The 25 volunteer firefighters had to go off road to access the fire, leaving the large engines and equipment behind. Around 6:18 p.m. Friday, someone called 911 after seeing smoke coming from a wooded area near the 700 block of Shore Drive in the Rumsey Island area of Joppa, according to a release from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company. Fire spread through a Forest Lakes Elementary School classroom in the early hours of Thursday morning and officials believe a malfunctioning heating unit is to blame. Around 1:20 a.m. Thursday, a Harford County Sheriff's Office deputy on patrol noticed a fire inside the school, located at 100 block of Osborne Parkway in Forest Hill, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Investigators believe the fire started accidentally.
A fire in a detached garage in Joppa caused about $15,000 in damage Saturday. Shortly before 12:11 p.m. neighbors noticed the fire in the 500 block of Magnolia Road and called 911, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Twenty-five firefighters from Joppa-Magnolia, Abingdon and Bel Air Volunteer Fire Companies and Aberdeen Proving Ground professional fire department responded to the scene and controlled the blaze within half an hour, the release states. A camping tent was damaged Saturday when an open flame heater set fire to flammable material inside the shelter. Fire officials believe two men were living in the tent at the time of the fire. Around 3:54 p.m. Saturday, fire crews were called to a wooded area near the intersection of Atwood Road and Marketplace Drive, not far from Target after the occupants of a tent in the area discovered the shelter was aflame, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Five firefighters from the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company controlled the fire in the fabric tent within 15 minutes, the release states. A house fire in Riverside drew firefighters from throughout the county Friday afternoon.
A fire broke out in a Riverside townhome Friday afternoon, causing thousands in damage. Around 2:49 p.m. the homeowner noticed a fire inside the home in the 4300 block of Foxglove Court, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal. Thirty firefighters from Joppa, Abingdon, Aberdeen and Bel Air Volunteer Fire Companies responded and controlled the blaze within 10 minutes, the release states. The fire caused about $10,000 to the building and about $5,000 to what was inside it, according to deputy fire marshals. Investigators believe the fire started accidentally in the home's master bedroom.

A fire broke out on the porch of an Edgewood home Monday morning, and firefighters quickly extinguished the flames. Fire officials believe the blaze started when a hot soldering iron ignited nearby combustible materials, according to a release from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company. Around 9:30 a.m. someone called 911 reporting a house in the unit block of McCann Street in Edgewood, the release states. A Perry Hall man is facing charges in connection with two incidents in Abingdon Tuesday.
A Perry Hall man has been charged with setting shrubs on fire at two different places in Abingdon late Monday night. Police say John Paul Akin Jr. admitted to setting two fires—one at the intersection of MD Route 24 and I-95 and the other outside a residence not far away—because of "personal issues" and anger, according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office. Akin, 22, of the unit block of Ripplebrook Court in Perry Hall, was charged by criminal summons Tuesday with two counts of malicious burning. A fire broke out inside a Street home early Monday morning, ultimately causing an estimated $275,000 damage, fire officials said. The occupant of a one-story rancher in the 2000 block of Mt. Horeb Road noticed his home was on fire around 3:20 a.m., according to a release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
