Harford County Under Tornado Watch

The watch lasts until 10 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Harford County and much of Maryland until 10 p.m. Friday. A watch means it is probable a tornado will happen; a warning is when it is imminent, according to the National Weather Service. The Harford County Emergency Operations Center issued an alert message about the watch around 3:20 p.m. "This means that conditions are favorable for strong to severe storms, which could mean the development of tornadoes," Linda Ploener with Harford emergency operations said in the alert call. The forecast shows heavy rain, along with strong winds and thunderstorms, will move through the area as a cold-front approaches. Heavy Rain in the Forecast for Bel Air

Low-lying areas may be in a precarious position, according to the National Weather Service.

Harford County and most of the state are bracing for hazardous weather, which the National Weather Service said would be hitting Maryland Tuesday afternoon. Rain should start at about 3 p.m. according to the weather service, and we can expect moderate to heavy rainfall Tuesday afternoon and evening. In all, Bel Air may see between one to one-and-a-half inches of rain. According to the forecast discussion, this time of year there is more rainwater runoff than there is rain soaked into the soil.  Runoff coupled with the amount of rain forecast can lead to small streams and creeks rising out of their banks, according to the weather service, causing local flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas.
