Freezing rain and a wintry mix caused a delayed opening to end the week.
Due to freezing rain and a wintry mix, Harford County Public Schools are opening two hours late Friday. Morning pre-K and preschool services will not be held. John Carroll School will also open two hours late, with a 2:40 p.m. dismissal for all students. Harford Day School will also open two hours late. A wintry mix is predicted for Thursday night.
Winter storm Nemo may be pounding the New York City area with 30 inches of snow, but Harford County residents are in for much milder winter weather. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for central Maryland, the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, northern Virginia and D.C. The outlook warns of a possible light wintry mix and freezing rain. Rain that may be mixed with snow and sleet is expected to fall Thursday night, and will turn to all rain after 4 a.m. Friday, according to the weather agency. Temperatures are predicted to range from a low around 34 to a high near 39. Harford County was placed under a tornado watch Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service. The watch was issued at 6:39 p.m. and set to expire at 2 a.m. Thursday. UPDATED (7:15 a.m.)—With wintry weather in the forecast, Harford County Public Schools will be closed Monday. The school system initially called for a two-hour delay, officials announced shortly before 5 a.m. Monday. But by 7:11 a.m., officials announced that schools were closed. Employees are "code blue," officials said. Harford County—and much of Maryland—was under a winter weather advisory from 5 a.m. to noon Monday. Snow started falling fast across Harford County around 3 p.m. Friday, prompting schools to dismiss two hours early. Within an hour, a thin layer of white covered side roads and parked cars. Public schools in Harford County opened on time Thursday morning in spite of snow. Neighboring Baltimore County schools opened two hours late, as did schools in a few other jurisdictions further south. While some areas in Baltimore saw two inches of snow, Harford County only saw a light dusting, according to the National Weather Service, which issued a winter weather advisory until 11 a.m. Thursday for the Baltimore-Washington region. Harford County is awaiting its first significant snowfall of 2013.
Harford County residents could be in for their first big snowfall of 2013 this weekend. Forecasts vary, but a storm projected to reach the Baltimore metro area on Friday could dump a few inches of powder just in time for the weekend. Weather.com forecasts about 1-to-3 inches of snow for the area, depending upon the forecast models. Weather.gov forecasts a 60 percent chance of snow on Friday, and a 40 percent chance on Friday night. The projected high for Friday is 26 degrees, with a low of 17 degrees. There's also a 50 percent chance of snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to Weather.gov. The National Weather Service predicts about an inch of snow in Harford County on Jan. 17.
Harford County's first snowfall of 2013 is approaching. Thursday afternoon could bring up to an inch of snow to areas of Harford County. Expect a high temperature in the upper 30s and northwest winds around 10 mph. Snowfall may continue in the evening with temperatures in the lower 30s, dipping into the 20s in some cases, the National Weather Service reports. But the brunt of the storm will likely hit farther south.
