A teacher's union president suggested two Harford schools may one day be forced to close if Harford County Public Schools aren't granted more funding from Harford County.
UPDATED (11:27 p.m.)—Despite the suggestion from a teacher's union president that Harford County Public Schools may need to consider closing some institutions, no such school shutdowns are imminent, officials said Monday. Ryan Burbey, president of the Harford County Education Association, said during public comment at last week's Harford County Council meeting that a decline in funding for education may eventually force schools to consider shutting down some buildings. The Harford County Board of Education approved a capital improvement plan Monday.
The Harford Board of Education put a shovel in the ground for Youth’s Benefit Elementary School, and agreed that Havre de Grace High School should have its turn, voting Monday to support local funding for new facilities at each school. The board passed the proposed Fiscal Year 2014 Capital Improvement Plan by a 7-1 vote, with board member Robert Frisch voting against the plan, citing “principle.” At a recent meeting, some members said the school replacement process has become political. Two schools are officially in the running, and two more communities joined the fray in pushing for new school funding in Harford County. At Monday's Harford County Board of Education meeting, parents from John Archer and Joppatowne High School asked to be considered for new schools—joining Havre de Grace High School and Youth's Benefit Elementary School in the discussion. The Harford County Board of Education welcomed two new members prior to Monday's meeting. Havre de Grace resident Thomas Fitzpatrick, appointed by Gov. Martin O'Malley to represent Havre de Grace, and Patterson Mill High School senior Panashe Mutombo, the student representative for the 2012-2013 school year, were sworn in Monday. Mutombo, with his family in the audience, was excited and grateful for this new adventure as Student Representative to the Board of Education. "I'm happy to be here," he said. "I'm happy to initiate a good year with all of you. I've seen all the good work that you guys have put in here and I see the effects through the schools and I'm just proud to be here." I played soccer for three years at Havre de Grace High School. By the end of my junior year I'd decided to stop trying to kick a round ball under the crossbar, and kick the oblong one over it—joining the football team to kick field goals. But once a year, I get to scratch that soccer itch. Thanks to the Baltimore Blast, some hack soccer players like myself get to play for about ten minutes at First Mariner Arena once a year—in what they call the media game. The Major Indoor Soccer League's Eastern Division champs, led by February's player of the month, Machel Millwood, have always been the ones in town to "get it." They're fan friendly. If there is such a "low enrollment" in higher capacity schools in the County, then why does MORE money need to be thrown at them? One would think that lower enrollment would mean LESS money required for operations, etc..   more ›
