More than 150 people lined up outside Joe's Crab Shack in Abingdon Monday to be among the first to taste the restaurant's cuisine.
More than 150 people were standing in the chilly January air Monday awaiting their first taste of Joe's Crab Shack. The restaurant, located in the Boulevard at Box Hill Shopping Center in Abingdon, officially opened its doors Monday with a ribbon-cutting and a waiting crowd. About 150 people were standing in line outside the restaurant shortly after the 11 a.m. ribbon cutting. "Some people were here as early as 12 p.m. yesterday," Brian Saunders said. Saunders was taking song requests and performing for those in line, along with Kevin Kelton, Bruce Mulford and "Skull." The staff at Joe's Crab Shack in the Boulevard at Box Hill are conducting mock service days for friends and family leading up to Monday's grand opening.
Joe's Crab Shack will officially open its doors Monday, but from Thursday through Saturday, the restaurant staff will get the swing of things by serving family and friends by invitation only. The days before opening, known as "mock service" days, give employees a dry run to practice for grand opening. "Everybody's excited when a new restaurant opens," general manager Craig Hawkins of Federal Hill said. Hawkins, who has been with the company for eight months, raved about one of Joe's Crab Shack's most popular dishes Thursday. "We're known for our steam pots," Hawkins said. The seafood restaurant will be in the Boulevard at Box Hill.
Joe's Crab Shack, the first restaurant slated for the Boulevard at Box Hill, is set to open by December, according to The Baltimore Sun. Originally projected to open Oct. 1, the business will join Wegmans, which opened Sept. 18. PNC Bank and Panera Bread are also set to open on the Boulevard, as first reported by Patch. The menu for Joe’s includes shrimp, mussels, oysters, and of course, crabs. The restaurant also serves burgers, desserts and alcoholic beverages. Joe’s opened its first location in Texas in 1991 and now has 114 eateries nationwide, including in Greenbelt, Gaithersburg, Wilmington and Washington, DC. The Gourmet Dining corporation owns the restaurant. Encore Construction won the bid to build the business.

The Boulevard at Box Hill business will join Wegmans in the fall.
Annapolis-based construction company Encore Construction announced via Twitter recently that it was awarded a contract to build Joe’s Crab Shack. The seafood restaurant will join Wegmans and other businesses on the Boulevard at Box Hill. “Encore is very excited to be working with Joe’s Crab Shack on their Abingdon, Md. location,” project manager Kevin Rogers told Patch in an email. “We teamed with Joe’s Crab Shack on their Greenbelt, Md. location as well and it continues to be a great fit for our companies to work together.” They were awarded the project July 7 and the opening is scheduled for mid-November. The Boulevard at Box Hill's first phase of businesses have all been announced.
The “bakers of bread” will join Boulevard at Box Hill cornerstone Wegmans as the final Phase I business in Abingdon’s newest shopping center. The Abingdon store, set to open Sept. 18, is accepting applications for 150 full-time positions. Seafood lovers rejoice. Joe’s Crab Shack will be the first restaurant to join Wegmans in the Boulevard at Box Hill. Joe's is scheduled to open Oct. 1, less than two weeks after the grocery superstore’s opening on Sept. 18 (three days later than its original start date). I was so impressed with the Grand Opening of Joe's!! The food and service was exceptional! Joe's couldn't help guest waited in line before they opened for free crabs! You snooze you loose. I didn't get free crabs that morning but, so much goes into a Grand Opening and they were on point with everything! People just like to have something to complain about and miss the big picture.
