Harford County Emergency Operations Center will activate at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Harford County will partially activate its emergency operations center at 8 a.m. Wednesday to prepare for a winter storm. Harford County Emergency Manager Rick Ayers, in an automated phone message to county residents around 6 p.m. Tuesday, said the county is anticipating the heaviest snow during the day Wednesday, with up to six inches of snow possible. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are also possible, Ayers said. Earlier Tuesday, the National Weather Service was projecting up to 10 inches of snow for parts of Harford County. Schools initially were scheduled for a late opening, but were closed shortly after 7 a.m. Monday.
UPDATED (7:15 a.m.)—With wintry weather in the forecast, Harford County Public Schools will be closed Monday. The school system initially called for a two-hour delay, officials announced shortly before 5 a.m. Monday. But by 7:11 a.m., officials announced that schools were closed. Employees are "code blue," officials said. Harford County—and much of Maryland—was under a winter weather advisory from 5 a.m. to noon Monday. A wintry mix was in the forecast, with poor travel conditions likely. Schools closed two hours early Friday due to snow. Much of Maryland—from the D.C. metro area to the Baltimore suburbs—is under a winter weather advisory Monday morning. The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. until noon in Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, Howard and Montgomery counties, as well as Baltimore City, the National Weather Service announced Sunday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to be in the high 20s by midday, but morning commuters may encounter freezing rain mixed with sleet and possibly snow, according to the advisory. Only a trace of accumulation is expected. Winds from the south will gust to 10 to 15 mph, the advisory said. The precipitation "will cause travel difficulties," the advisory said. Harford County is awaiting its first significant snowfall of 2013.
Harford County residents could be in for their first big snowfall of 2013 this weekend. Forecasts vary, but a storm projected to reach the Baltimore metro area on Friday could dump a few inches of powder just in time for the weekend. Weather.com forecasts about 1-to-3 inches of snow for the area, depending upon the forecast models. Weather.gov forecasts a 60 percent chance of snow on Friday, and a 40 percent chance on Friday night. The projected high for Friday is 26 degrees, with a low of 17 degrees. There's also a 50 percent chance of snow Wednesday night into Thursday morning, according to Weather.gov. The National Weather Service predicts about an inch of snow in Harford County on Jan. 17.
Harford County's first snowfall of 2013 is approaching. Thursday afternoon could bring up to an inch of snow to areas of Harford County. Expect a high temperature in the upper 30s and northwest winds around 10 mph. Snowfall may continue in the evening with temperatures in the lower 30s, dipping into the 20s in some cases, the National Weather Service reports. But the brunt of the storm will likely hit farther south. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Howard, Anne Arundel and Queen Anne's counties and points south, including much of northern Virginia.
