Officials: No Harford School Shutdowns On Tap

A teacher's union president suggested two Harford schools may one day be forced to close if Harford County Public Schools aren't granted more funding from Harford County.

UPDATED (11:27 p.m.)—Despite the suggestion from a teacher's union president that Harford County Public Schools may need to consider closing some institutions, no such school shutdowns are imminent, officials said Monday. Ryan Burbey, president of the Harford County Education Association, said during public comment at last week's Harford County Council meeting that a decline in funding for education may eventually force schools to consider shutting down some buildings. Burbey addressed an "imminent funding crisis" for Harford County Public Schools. "If we don’t do something soon, your schools face dramatic cuts," he said. "The schools that are most at-risk are our at-risk schools, our schools at the upper end of the county where the …

If there is such a "low enrollment" in higher capacity schools in the County, then why does MORE money need to be thrown at them? One would think that lower enrollment would mean LESS money required for operations, etc..   more ›

Board of Ed OKs Funding For Havre de Grace High, Youth's Benefit Elementary

The Harford County Board of Education approved a capital improvement plan Monday.

The Harford Board of Education put a shovel in the ground for Youth’s Benefit Elementary School, and agreed that Havre de Grace High School should have its turn, voting Monday to support local funding for new facilities at each school. The board passed the proposed Fiscal Year 2014 Capital Improvement Plan by a 7-1 vote, with board member Robert Frisch voting against the plan, citing “principle.” At a recent meeting, some members said the school replacement process has become political. Supporters, students, and teachers of both schools have voiced their concern over a variety of issues—including safety, security, overcrowding, poor sanitary conditions, boarded up water fountains due to lead contamination, limited technology, and leaking …

Quite frankly, I think Havre de Grace needs a new high school. I just graduated from there this past spring, and I couldn't have been happier. Morale is so low in that school, and part of it is the building itself. It looks so run-down, it's hard to take pride in. I'm proud, not of my school, but its music and arts program. It's also too small. Unless you power walk, there's a 95% guarantee that …   more ›

Parents Say Crowded, Weathered Youth's Benefit Deserves New Building

Youth's Benefit Elementary School parent's and faculty members showed their support for a new school at Monday evening's Board of Education meeting.

Parents, PTA members and students representing Youth's Benefit Elementary School were all in agreement at Monday's Board of Education meeting—the school needs a new building. The school, which is already over capacity by roughly 150 students and the largest elementary school in Harford County, faces poor sanitary conditions, boarded up water fountains due to lead contamination, over crowded classrooms, limited technology, and leaking roofs. These were just a few of the problems mentioned by supporters of a new building Monday evening. Youth's Benefit parent Sandy Boyd, who also volunteers at the school, complained about the lack of technology currently offered since the school's computer lab was taken out and replaced with a classroom.   "…

I attended the previous Bel Air High when it was very dilapidated and it wasn't until 30 years later that it was finally rebuilt. I still learned in the old building and went on to do very well. Its not always about the building but the way students apply themselves (or not) in learning. I think we need to be very careful to think that we need the fanciest buildings money can buy, because that …   more ›
