Bear Roaming Region, Now Near Susquehanna River

Bear sightings reported across areas of Baltimore and Harford counties are believed to be of the same bear, officials told Patch.

Officials say one bear has been making a number of appearances throughout Baltimore and Harford counties over the last week. A bear sighted in Baltimore County last week is believed to be the same bear that has been roaming through parts of central Harford County this week. “Our thinking is that it's the same bear,” said Ken D’Loughey, a regional manager with the Maryland Wildlife Heritage Service. A bear was reported near the Susquehanna River Thursday. Have you seen a bear? Add your photos to our Pics & Clips page. D’Loughey told Patch Thursday morning the bear was most recently sighted at Glen Cove Road in Darlington. That sighting was at 11:15 a.m., following a report of a bear at Route 1 on the Harford County side of the Conowingo Dam…

Weekend Roadwork Means Delays at Dam

Road work on U.S. Route 1 at the Conowingo Dam was slated for two May weekends.

Roadwork is causing significant delays on U.S. Route 1 at the Conowingo Dam this weekend. The Maryland State Highway Administration is paving lanes on the bridge deck. This period of road work should be complete by 6 a.m. on Monday. "There are delays in each direction of US 1 at the Conowingo Dam due to construction. There is a flagging operation in effect. We recommend motorists to use I-95 or US 40 as alternates," SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar told Patch in an email. Roadwork is being confined to the weekends. Aside from the Conowingo Dam, the Tydings Bridge (Interstate 95) and Hatem Bridge (U.S. Route 40) are the only alternate routes to cross the Susquehanna River south of the Mason Dixon Line. Both bridges have tolls heading north, …

PHOTOS: Where Eagles Soar

The Susquehanna River offers a chance to glimpse Bald Eagles.

Just beneath the Conowingo Dam lies a significant habitat for resident and migratory Bald Eagles. For that reason, photographers and sightseers often flock to the landing below the dam to catch a glimpse of the magnificent birds. Havre de Grace photographer Ed Rybczynski recently captured some of the eagles in flight along the Susquehanna River. TELL US: Have you seen the eagles at the Conowingo Dam? Have you spotted eagles elsewhere in Harford County? Leave a comment.

I saw a bald eagle late one afternoon a few weeks ago. He was sitting in a tall tree at a corner of our property. He swooped down low over our neighbors pond, circled around, and caught a small fish. He then flew off with his dinner, chased by a crow. I live in Pylesville near NHHS.   more ›

MdTA: Like Tolls, Traffic Has Increased

Data indicates overall traffic volume is up throughout the MdTA's toll facilities.

It's too early to tell how the increase in tolls on Maryland roads will impact travel. But Randy Brown, executive secretary of the Maryland Transportation Authority, said traffic throughout the MdTA system has actually increased since the rates went up in October 2011. The Hatem Bridge spanning the Susquehanna River between Havre de Grace and Perryville was the topic of much debate in the lead-up to the toll increases. The outrage wasn't so much over the rate increase, but more for the removal of the popular AVI decal program, which enabled motorists to pay a flat, yearly rate to travel the bridge. That system is still in use through September 2012, but will be phased out in favor of the E-ZPass system that is used throughout the state and…

Weekend Wanderer

Sun, Solace On Susquehanna River

Set aside a weekend to enjoy the outdoors where sun, fun and history all meet on the Susquehanna.

I’m not having the best of days when I turn onto Level Road toward Susquehanna State Park. The weather is supposed to remain clear and sunny for the next two days, but family disagreements earlier in the day cloud my mood. And being slightly superstitious by nature, I can’t help but feel that the $6.66 I owe when I stop for a bite to eat is somewhat ominous. After pulling into the campground, I stop at the little information hut. Inside, a man with close-cut hair wears a khaki state park uniform and a smile. His name tag reads Todd. “Hi; checking in?” I answer in the affirmative and he takes my name and writes it down. Then he pulls out a map and circles attractions with a pink highlighter, including the route to my campsite. He also goes …

Body Found on Cecil Side of Susquehanna River

Officers from the Maryland State Police North East Barrack are investigating the incident.

A Port Deposit man who apparently committed suicide was pulled from the rocks on the Cecil County side of the Susquehanna River on Sunday. The Water Witch Fire Company responded to the scene Sunday afternoon and found Andrew J. Hall, 45, on the rocky shore of the river, according to Chief Wayne Tome Sr. “He was obviously deceased. He had been there for a while,” said Tome, who added that the body was found near the Mount Zoar boat ramp in Port Deposit in Cecil County. Tome said the fire company turned the investigation over to the Maryland State Police North East Barrack. A dispatcher for the barrack confirmed officers from that office are investigating the incident. Greg Shipley, spokesman for Maryland State Police, said North East …
