Veterans Day in Bel Air, Harford County

Find out what's closed and how to honor veterans for the holiday.

Government offices in Harford County will be closed Monday, Nov. 12, for Veterans Day, including the municipalities of Bel Air, Aberdeen and Havre de Grace. Veterans Day is officially Nov. 11; however, Monday, Nov. 12, is considered a federal holiday. Non-essential federal offices and research facilities will be closed Nov. 12. Most banks will be closed, and there is no mail delivery through the U.S. Postal Service on Veterans Day. In addition to city and county government offices, the Harford County Waste Disposal Center will be closed Monday and Harford Transit will not be operational. Hometown Heroes: Sgt. Henry Joe Raphel

Banners recognizing hometown heroes, like Henry Joe Raphel, have lined Main Street in Bel Air since Veterans Day and will likely stay up through the middle of January.

Banners honoring local men and women for military service line Main Street in Bel Air. Sgt. Henry Joe Raphel of Creswell is among those honored with a Hometown Hero banner. Raphel served in the U.S. Army from June 20, 1968 until May of 1975. He served in Vietnam within that period. His family and friends sponsored his banner. The banners have lined the street since Veterans Day. Each banner honors someone in Harford County and the surrounding area who served in the military. The Bel Air Downtown Alliance started the 2011 Hometown Hero Banner Program in observance of the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day and expects to continue the program next year. Hometown Heroes: Gilbert F. Beavers

Banners illustrating hometown heroes like Gilbert Beavers have lined Main Street in Bel Air since Veterans Day and will likely stay up through the middle of January.

  Twenty-nine people are featured in Hometown Hero banners this year, including Gilbert Beavers of Abingdon. Gilbert F. Beavers, also known as Pete, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, according to his banner that hangs on Main Street. Beavers passed away in June of 1995. To honor his service and heroism, the Beavers family sponsored a banner in his name. The banners have lined the street since Veterans Day. Each banner honors someone in Harford County and the surrounding area who has served in the military. The Bel Air Downtown Alliance started the 2011 Hometown Hero Banner Program in observance of the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day and expects to continue the program next year. Hometown Heroes: Sgt. John A. Weber

Banners illustrating hometown heroes like John A. Weber have lined Main Street in Bel Air since Veterans Day and will likely stay up through the middle of January.

Sometimes all it takes is a uniform to identify a local hero, but a banner highlighting a person's face can also do the trick. Finding a local hero was made simple this month with banners honoring local military service men and service women. The banners are expected to line Bel Air's Main Street through the middle of January. Sgt. John A. Weber is among the 29 people honored with "hometown hero" banners. The Bel Air resident has served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the global war on terror, the banner states. Weber's father, John D. Weber, sponsored the banner, according to Scott Walker, executive director of Bel Air Downtown Alliance. Hometown Heroes: Kenneth Moler

Banners illustrating hometown heroes like Kenneth Moler have lined Main Street in Bel Air since Veterans Day and will likely stay up through the middle of January.

Sometimes to find a hero, all you have to do is walk around town. For the next month, finding a local hero will be made a little easier by looking at the banners honoring local military service men and service women that are lining Bel Air's Main Street. Airman First Class Kenneth Moler is among the 29 people featured in the banners. Moler, an Abingdon resident, served in the U.S. Air Force during the global war on terror. His banner was sponsored by Gold Medal Physical Therapy LLC. The 2011 Hometown Hero Banner Program was started by the Bel Air Downtown Alliance in observance of the 100th anniversary of Veterans Day. Banners illustrating hometown heroes like William M. Cantler have lined Main Street in Bel Air since Veterans Day and will likely stay up through the middle of January.

Although he passed away on New Year's Day this year, William M. Cantler's military service and heroism are still remembered. Cantler is among 29 people honored with Hometown Hero banners in downtown Bel Air. A Delta, PA, native who relocated to Bel Air, Cantler served in the Army during the Korean War and his family has sponsored a banner along Main Street is his name. The banners have lined the street since Veterans Day. Each banner honors someone in Harford County and the surrounding area who has served in the military. A Bel Air resident and veteran of two U.S. military is among those honored by a hometown hero banner. SGM Robert R. Cassilly of Bel Air served in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1980. His time in the service included the Korean and Vietnam Eras. You can see his picture and the faces of other local men and women who have served in the U.S. military along Main Street in Bel Air. Hometown Heroes: Joseph I. Cassilly

Banners illustrating hometown heroes, like the current Harford County State's Attorney Joe Cassilly, have lined Main Street in Bel Air since Veterans Day and will likely stay up through the middle of January.

Harford County State's Attorney Joseph I. Cassilly is among the faces that line Main Street on hometown hero banners as part of a program from Bel Air Downtown Alliance to honor veterans. Cassilly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, between December 1968 and February 1971. He trained as a ranger and was later injured in the line of duty when he fell more than 50 feet and broke his neck during a helicopter extraction in enemy territory. Cassilly's banner is hanging outside the Harford County Courthouse in Bel Air.
