The sequestration talks are taking place just a short ride away and if it occurs, its effects will be felt on Aberdeen Proving Ground, around Harford County and the state, local politicians say. Gov. Martin O’Malley, in an appearance in Howard County Wednesday, said that 12,000 jobs in Maryland could be lost due to sequestration. To put that number in perspective, the governor said approximately 30,000 jobs were created in the state last year. “All of the great work that each of you does here is threatened by the uncertainty of the dysfunction in the halls of our House of Representatives,” said O’Malley. Aberdeen Proving Ground officials on Friday identified the man who died Wednesday during an underwater test at the Super Pond test facility on post. George H. Lazzaro Jr., 41, of Nottingham, died while performing "routine underwater test infrastructure maintenence at the Underwater Test Facility," according to an APG news release. The cause of death was not immediately known and an autopsy is pending. The U.S. Army is investigating the incident, the release stated. Lazzaro worked with the Firepower Directorate, Aberdeen Test Center, U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command, according to the release. Emergency personnel were alerted to a possible drowning on post Wednesday.
UPDATE: (7:18 p.m.)—A person died on Aberdeen Proving Ground after an accident at an unexploded ordinance range pond Wednesday afternoon. Around 2:30 p.m. Susquehanna Hose Company's dive team was notified of a possible drowning on post by Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department, the Susquehanna Hose Chief Scott Hurst said Wednesday. The team arrived at the scene shortly before 3 p.m. to assist, Hurst said. The person involved died and the body has been recovered, according to a release from the U.S. Army Garrison public affairs office. The victim's name has not been released pending family notification. No further information was available as of post time.
