Accused Cannibal Pleads Guilty To Unrelated Attempted Murder

The Joppa man accused of killing his housemate, and eating part of the dead man's heart and brains, pleaded guilty, but not criminally responsible for an attempted murder that took place on the Morgan State campus a week before.

Alexander Kinyua entered the plea Wednesday in a Baltimore court, according to a Baltimore Sun report.

The charges stem from a May 19 incident in which Kinyua, 22, of the 500 block of Terrapin Terrace in Joppa, allegedly attacked another man with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire, according to the Baltimore Sun's story.

In that case he is charged with atttempted first-degree murder and four related charges.

About a week later, police said Kinyua confessed to killing his Joppa housemate Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, who had been missing for several days. He was indicted by a Harford County grand jury on murder charges in June.

In August, Kinyua was deemed temporarily unfit to stand trial in the Harford County murder case.

Court records show Harford County State's Attorney Joe Cassilly submitted a letter to the court stating his office reviewed a report from Clifton T. Perkins Hospital, a maximum security psychiatric facility, and agreed that based on the report, Kinyua was found incompetent to stand trial.

Cassilly consented to the ruling without a hearing, according to court records.

A criminal motions hearing and jury trial initially set for November were postponed an additional 60 days to allow the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to complete their evaluations, online court records show. The case has not been rescheduled.
