Police: 150-lb. Watermelon Stolen from Harford Garden

The watermelon, valued at about $1,500, was taken Friday night. It has not yet been recovered.

Police remain on the lookout for a 150-pound watermelon that was taken from a Northern Harford County garden Friday afternoon.

As of Monday morning, Edward Hopkins, a spokesman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office, said the watermelon has not yet been recovered.

Around 4 p.m. on Friday, deputies responded to the 2600 block of Dublin Road in Street, MD for the report of a stolen watermelon. The owner said that he grows a specific large type of Carolina cross watermelon in his backyard. He said he harvests the watermelon for their seeds, which he sends to Kenya to grow them there.

Hopkins said the owner reported he went to check on the watermelon at 1:45 p.m. and noticed one of them was missing.

"It appeared that suspects cut the vine and removed [the watermelon]," Hopkins said in an email.

The watermelon that was stolen was approximately 150 pounds and valued at $1,500, Hopkins said.
