'Rock State Park' Sign to Be Fixed, State Highway Administration Says

The sign intended to promote 'Rocks State Park' is getting its rightful 's' next week, giving residents needed relief.

An employee with the State Highway Administration noticed a missing "s" that a Bel Air Patch reader flagged, too. It wasn't just any "s."

Steve Fairbough posted a photo of the sign advertising "Rock State Park" on Bel Air Patch this week, a misspelling that readers said has driven them "crazy" as they've passed by it on either side of the US Route 1 bypass near MD Route 24.

The sign for "Rock State Park" will not get under people's skin for much longer.

It was installed in the second week of August, and the State Highway Administration said in the next week, the sign will promote "Rocks State Park," which is the official name of the Maryland park eight miles northwest of Bel Air.

"An SHA employee noticed the incorrect spelling, we requested a new panel from our sign shop, and we are currently scheduling the bucket truck to install the new panel," David Buck of the State Highway Administration said on Nov. 5.

According to Buck, the bucket truck is in high demand, and while the fix may appear to require adding a simple "s," it actually entails redoing the entire panel of letters altogether.

"We cannot just place an 's' after 'Rock' because of the spacing on the existing sign, so we will put an entire new panel on the top line with everything spelled correctly," Buck said.

Rocks State Park encompasses 855 acres—and many rocks—including the King and Queen Seat, a 190-foot rock that juts out over Deer Creek.
